Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League standings last season. Hence, a Europa League win could've helped them win a major trophy and qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season. However, they failed to do so, and Tottenham Hotspur, who finished 17th last season, won the trophy.

As per The Athletic, after the defeat Ruben Amorim laid into Alejandro Garnacho, allegedly asking him to find a new agent this summer. The Argentine came on as a substitute in the final but failed to make a big impact. He was later sold to Chelsea in the summer.

Meanwhile, Amorim also reportedly slammed Manuel Ugarte ahead of Manchester United's clash against Aston Villa on the final day of last season. The Uruguayan midfielder didn't feature in the final, but it didn't stop the Portuguese manager from criticising him.

As per the report, Amorim said he did “not recognise him as the same player from their first stint together”. Ugarte played 85 games under the Portuguese manager at Sporting CP, recording one goal and three assists. He has now registered two goals and six assists in 44 games under Amorim for Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim asserts Manchester United are improving after draw against Spurs

In their first clash against the Europa League final, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur played out a 2-2 draw on November 8. Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the 32nd minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League clash.

Mathys Tel (84') and Richarlison (90+1') appeared to turn it around for Spurs, but Matthijs de Ligt (90+6') scored a late equalizer to secure a draw. After the game, Ruben Amorim said (h/t manutd.com):

"We have a lot of problems. We are just in the beginning. I know that sometimes the results show to people that we are improving, and we are improving, but we have a lot to do."

United are unbeaten in their last five games, winning three and drawing the other two. They are seventh in the standings, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

Amorim's side will next face Everton at Old Trafford after the international break on Monday, November 24.
