Sir Jim Ratcliffe has blocked Manchester United's potential move for Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski. While head coach Ruben Amorim is interested in the Poland international, the club's minority owner is against signing him.
Lewandowski has been one of the best strikers in the world in recent years, delivering excellent numbers for Bayern Munich and Barcelona. However, he is also 37 now and will turn 38 in August next year. His contract with the Blaugrana expires next summer, and he hasn't been offered a new one.
Hence, Lewandowski could leave the Spanish giants as a free agent next summer. This could see multiple clubs look to sign him. However, as per the Mirror, Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has blocked any potential move by the club for the striker.
The Red Devils have signed some big names in recent years despite them being in the twilight of their careers. This includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edison Cavani, and Raphael Varane, among others. Many of them have failed to make a big impact, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe is intent on not making a similar mistake.
Moreover, Lewandowski's wages are also a big concern, as he earns a whopping £540,000 per week at Barcelona. Meanwhile, Manchester United have been working on reducing their wage bill since Sir Jim Ratcliffe's arrival in February 2024.
Manchester United legend on Barcelona loanee Marcus Rashford's attitude
Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United in the summer. He has started well, scoring five goals and providing seven assists in 13 games across competitions.
However, United legend Paul Scholes has said that he finds it tough to be happy for the English forward. He raised questions about his attitude at Old Trafford, saying:
“I really struggle to feel happy for him (Rashford). Mainly because of his attitude. His attitude towards Man Utd towards the end, I thought it was disgraceful. The amount of times I saw him at Man Utd, walking…”
Rashford came through Manchester United's academy and has registered 138 goals and 78 assists in 426 senior games for them. He has helped them win the UEFA Europa League trophy, among other honors.
However, the Englishman had a falling out with head coach Ruben Amorim last season. He was sent on loan to Aston Villa for the second half of the season. He has now joined Barcelona, and is expected to the leave the Red Devils permanently next summer.
