Real Madrid fans on X have questioned Xabi Alonso’s decision to exclude Arda Guler from the starting XI for their LaLiga match with Athletic Bilbao. The two teams are set to face off at San Mamés on Wednesday, December 3.

Alonso made two changes to his team that drew 1-1 with Girona in their last outing. Guler and Fran Garcia drop out of the squad, with Alvaro Carreras and Eduardo Camavinga taking their place in the lineup.

Guler has been a mainstay in Alonso's squad, making 19 appearances so far this season while starting each of their last five league matches. The Turkish prodigy has forged a lethal combination with Kylian Mbappe, who he has assisted multiple times.

In a bid to arrest their recent slide, Alonso named Guler as a substitute for the clash against Bilbao, and the tactical decision didn’t sit well with some Los Blancos supporters.

A third added:

“Bellingham and no Guler, we're not winning the liga.”

“Seriously no Arda Guler, the most creative player in the squad,” another chimed in.

Alonso had addressed claims that Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler can’t play together ahead of the match, saying:

“After the Barça and Valencia matches, those who had these doubts didn't ask these questions. We've lost a little bit of quality in our play and energy. All the players are affected. They can play together, and they will do so again.”

Real Madrid sit second in the table coming into this game, while Bilbao are outside the European qualification zone.

“It’s a stadium where you have to play with a lot of energy” – Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso on facing Bilbao away from home

While speaking in the Real Madrid City press room a day before the match against Bilbao, Alonso claimed the clash between the two teams is one of the ‘classic fixtures’ in the Spanish top flight. He went on to stress the importance of playing with ‘energy’ and ‘concentration’ at San Mames, noting the atmosphere at the stadium.

He told reporters

“It's one of this league's, and Spanish football's, classic fixtures. There's always a great atmosphere at San Mamés. It's a stadium where you have to play with a lot of energy and concentration, knowing from past experience how to approach it.”

A win will see Real Madrid cut the gap between them and Barcelona to one point. The Catalans sit atop the table with 37 points.
