Despite having a positive start to the game, the Reds found themselves trailing in the 33rd minute when Murillo's strike went past Alisson Becker following a corner. Igor Jesus thought he had doubled his side's advantage minutes later, only for his goal to be ruled out due to a handball in the build-up.

Liverpool were left further shellshocked after the break after Nicolo Savona made it 2-0 in the 46th minute. Morgan Gibbs-White then found the bottom-right corner in the 78th minute to secure three vital points for Nottingham Forest as they sealed an impressive win at Anfield.

Alexander Isak made his first start for Liverpool in nearly a month after being preferred to Hugo Ekitike. However, the £125 million summer signing struggled to get involved in the game, as he completed just six passes from an attempted eight, created one chance, and landed zero shots on target from one attempt. The 26-year-old also completed zero dribbles, crosses, and lost seven duels before being subbed off in the 55th minute for Ekitike.

One fan reacted to Isak's display by posting:

"Alexander Isak put in a completely anonymous display against Nottingham Forest, finishing the match with 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots on target, 0 dribbles, 0 tackles, no crosses or long balls, losing all 3 aerial duels and all 4 ground duels, and surrendering possession 7 times. It was a performance where nothing clicked, and his impact was virtually non-existent."
