David Raya has come in for a kicking from fans for his performance during Arsenal’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, November 23. Many were particularly critical of the goal the goalkeeper conceded even though the Gunners made light work of their north London rivals with a 4-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.
Eager to capitalize on Manchester City’s slip-up against Newcastle United on Saturday, Arsenal started the game strongly, with Declan Rice forcing a brilliant save from Guglielmo Vicario in the third minute.
The Gunners continued to dominate possession and took the lead in the 36th minute when Mikel Merino’s chipped pass found Leandro Trossard, whose strike deflected off the leg of a Spurs defender before finding the back of the net.
Eberechi Eze doubled Arsenal’s advantage five minutes later, rifling home from close range. Spurs’ failure to register a shot in the opening 45 minutes meant Mikel Arteta’s men took a clean sheet lead into the break.
Eze scored a third 35 seconds after the restart after receiving a pass from Jurrien Timber. However, Richarlison pulled one back for Tottenham just before the hour mark, catching Raya off guard from a distance. Spurs’ hopes of a comeback were thrown out of the window when former Crystal Palace star Eze completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute.
In addition to being beaten from a distance, some of Raya’s distributions weren’t the best, and the Spaniard received a match rating of 6.7, as per Sofascore. After the match, fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to slam him for his display, with one writing:
“I blame David Raya, he's stupidly refusing to work on that part of his game.”
Another tweeted:
“David Raya keeps making this same mistake. Very good.”
“Get rid of David Raya and get a world class keeper in. This guy is so unreliable and will let you down on the big stage constantly,” a fan wrote.
Another claimed Raya has lost concentration like former goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
“David Raya has reached Ramsdale's level of lack of concentration,” they remarked.
A fifth added:
“I’ll never understand why a goalkeeper needs to be 40 yards from his goal unless they are chasing a goal in a one off game! modern day football man, so bad from David Raya.”
