The latest loss was a 2-1 home reverse to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League, days after a 2-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo in La Liga. Madrid had opened the scoring through Rodrygo, but City hit back twice before the break to eventually take the win.

Dissecting the struggles of his old side, Benzema, who left Madrid in 2023, said that several players are playing out of position, affecting team chemistry (as per L'Equipe via Instant Foot):

"What they're missing is just a connection. Between Mbappe, Vinicius, Bellingham and Rodrygo. Each one needs to know what they have to do on the pitch. Bellingham needs to understand that he's the playmaker, not the forward. Mbappe is the forward, not the playmaker. Vinicius, he's not the 6, he's the left winger.
"Once everyone knows what they have to do on the pitch, it's done. Because we're talking about guys who are among the ten best players in the world, and they're all on the same team."

Los Blancos will look to snap their two-game losing skid when they travel to Alaves in La Liga on Sunday (December 14).

Despite losing twice in their opening six games, Madrid remain in control of their own destiny, being among the top eight, meaning direct passage to the Round of 16.

Acknowledging the team's struggles, especially in La Liga, where they are four points behind leaders Barcelona after 16 games, the Belgian custodian told Movistar (as per UEFA):

"We want to win because we know the situation we're in: we've dropped too many points in La Liga, and although we're doing well in the Champions League, we can't afford to fall out of the top eight. But I think today we played well, giving 100%.

"And that was evident on the pitch, or at least that's the feeling I had on the pitch. We gave it our all. We played a good game, and it just wasn't meant to be."

Following the trip to Alaves in La Liga, Real Madrid conclude the year with a visit to Talavera in the Copa del Rey Round of 32 on December 17 before hosting Sevilla in the league three days later.
