Wayne Rooney has claimed that former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves was faster than Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo was regarded as one of the fastest players in the world during his peak years, particularly when he was a young player at Old Trafford.

However, Wayne Rooney has claimed that he himself was the fastest player in 30-yard tests in training. He also insisted that it was Owen Hargreaves who came second ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. Rooney told BBC Sport, as quoted by TBR Football:

“We’ve done tests over 30 yards, I think it was. And I was topping in that. Owen Hargreaves was actually second. Yeah, Owen was quicker than people think. So yeah, I was faster than that. But there are all different aspects in football.”

Previously, Rio Ferdinand also acknowledged Hargreaves' pace and claimed that the former English midfielder was actually the fastest player in every test. He said on Rio Ferdinand Presents in 2024, via TBR Football:

“He came into the training ground when he signed, and we did testing, and he blew everyone out of the water. He blew everyone away; we used to do like 10 yards, 20 yards, and he won every race. Wayne Rooney used to go to the guy, ‘Who’s playing with the machine? Owen can’t be the fastest!’”

Manchester United had a plethora of talented footballers across the pitch under Sir Alex Ferguson. Cristiano Ronaldo spent six seasons at the club before making a then-world-record £80 million move to Real Madrid in 2009.

Owen Hargreaves joined Manchester United in 2007 and spent four seasons at the club, but his time was blighted by injuries. He made only 39 appearances for the club and shared the pitch with Cristiano Ronaldo on 29 occasions. He played 50 games with Wayne Rooney for club and country in total.

Former Manchester United star reveals 2 major goals Cristiano Ronaldo will want to achieve before retirement

Former Manchester United full-back Danny Simpson believes Cristiano Ronaldo has two targets before he decides to hang up his boots. He has claimed that the Portuguese superstar probably wants to score 1000 career goals and also share the pitch with his son.

Simpson has told GOAL that he believes that Ronaldo will extend his deal with Al-Nassr and continue playing until he reaches his two remaining targets. The former Manchester United defender said:

“I don’t think you can write him off. As long as he is scoring goals, as long as he doesn’t get any injuries, then it wouldn't surprise me because it’s him. I know he wants 1,000 goals. And I think he wants to play with his son.”

He added:

“Playing with your son, that’s probably one of the biggest targets that you can go for once you have won everything. Sharing a pitch with your son must be some feeling. You look at those targets. He does set targets and you look at those - 1,000 goals and play with his son - does he do those and think ‘right, I’ve done it all now’? I don’t know where you go after that. He’s just a phenomenal person, player. What he’s done for the game, it’s unbelievable.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is now 40 years of age and 950 career goals to his name while his son is 15 years of age. Ronaldo Junior plays for Al-Nassr's youth side and also made his debut for the Portugal U-16 national team.
