British journalist Piers Morgan seemingly questioned a Lionel Messi incident after Cristiano Ronaldo was shown a red card during Portugal's 2-0 to Ireland in the World Cup qualifiers. This marked the first time Ronaldo was shown a red card in his international career.

Cristiano Ronaldo was first shown a yellow after elbowing defender Dara O'Shea away from the ball (61') in the penalty box. However, upon review, it was changed to a red card, and the Portuguese superstar was sent off for violent conduct. This means Ronaldo will miss Portugal's next qualifier game against Armenia on Sunday, where a win will guarantee them a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, he could also face a ban in the first World Cup game as per FIFA rules.

On November 14, British journalist Piers Morgan, who's a well-known Cristiano Ronaldo fan, shared a clip featuring Lionel Messi, seemingly hinting at double standards. The clip features Messi during one of Inter Miami's games, where he is seen pushing a player back, but he was eventually pushed and stumbled. Morgan wrote in the caption:

"When Messi did exactly the same recently, nothing was done."

Amid Morgan's claims, Lionel Messi delivered for Argentina once again tonight (November 14) as he scored and assisted once each in their clash vs Angola. Fans will eagerly look forward to Messi representing Albiceleste colors for the final time in the 2026 World Cup, if he chooses to play. It could be both Ronaldo and Messi's final appearance in the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo sat down with Piers Morgan for an interview this month, where he discussed multiple topics, including his age-old rivalry with Lionel Messi. During the interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, the British journalist shared his take on the GOAT debate and said:

"You know my view of this? I believe you are the greatest footballer to ever play the game. You also know there’s a raging debate, right? Whether Messi is. I say Messi is not even the best Argentinian. Maradona was better than him."

Ronaldo responded:

"Thank you."

The Ronaldo vs Messi debate has remained consistent in football as the two legends have dominated football over the last two decades. Despite the raging debate, fans and pundits will perhaps always remain divided over who's the better footballer.

Meanwhile, despite being at the twilight of their careers, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi continue to remain among the best players in the world. Lionel Messi is focused on leading Inter Miami to the MLS Cup this year, while Ronaldo continues to hold staggering numbers for Al-Nassr.
