Arteta praised the contribution of former Sporting Club striker Gyokeres in his post-match press conference on Saturday. He said that the 27-year-old's showing was exceptional, even if he had not managed to score in the game.

"I think it was one of the best games that he's played. I think that overall his performance was exceptional apart from the goal", he said (via @TikiTakaConnor on X).

Gyokeres was restored into the starting XI for the game by manager Arteta after he was rested for their midweek win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the EFL Cup. The Swede responded with his fourth Premier League goal of the season for his side, who lead the way in the league. The striker had been coveted by Manchester United in the summer but held out to join Arsenal for over £60 million in the summer.

Viktor Gyokeres' fine showing was cut short after just 45 minutes as he did not emerge for the second half for the Gunners. He was replaced by Mikel Merino, with Arteta explaining that Gyokeres had felt a muscular niggle and they decided not to keep him on.

Arsenal maintain fine form, ease past Burnley in league meeting

Arsenal kept up their impressive form with a 2-0 win over newly-promoted Burnley at their Turf Moor home on Saturday. The Gunners picked up a ninth successive win across all competitions and a fifth one in the league, momentarily moving seven points clear at the top of the pile.

Mikel Arteta made ten changes to the XI that defeated Brighton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday and went ahead against Burnley after just 14 minutes. A corner kick from Declan Rice was nudged on by Gabriel Magalhaes at the back post, allowing Viktor Gyokeres to head home emphatically from close range.

The Gunners doubled their lead with ten minutes of the half remaining following a fluid attack from back to front. Leandro Trossard put in a beautiful cross following impressive approach play, allowing Rice to pop up in the box and power a header past the goalkeeper.

Arsenal kept Burnley quiet throughout the game, with Marcus Edwards coming closest to registering a goal for the hosts when his stoppage time free-kick struck the woodwork. Arteta's side have now kept seven successive clean sheets, last conceding a goal back in September.
