“Not good enough Mo. You need to cover your full back” - Ex-Liverpool hero makes hilarious remark on Salah setting record

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has jumped in support of Mohamed Salah after he set a new Premier League record. The Egyptian became the player with the most goal involvements for one club in the top flight, surpassing Wayne Rooney's record of 276 for Manchester United.

Salah shared an infographic of the record on X (formerly Twitter) today, and Lovren was among those celebrating his success. The Croatian took a cheeky dig at the pundits who were calling for the winger to defend more and posted:

"Not good enough Mo. You need to cover your full back."

Wayne Rooney was among the pundits who believed that Salah should be doing more to help out the defenders. He said on his BBC show that the Egyptian's lack of defensive contribution was causing issues and said:

"We know he doesn't always get back and defend as much, but in the Chelsea game his full-back was getting torn apart and he was watching. He's not getting back and helping, and players like [Virgil] Van Dijk and the leaders in the dressing room should be telling him, 'you need to help out'. That was a worry and I think he has looked a bit lost over the last week. When it's going well and you're scoring goals and winning games it's great and the team will put up with that but, over the last week, I would question his work ethic."

Mohamed Salah assisted Hugo Ekitike's second goal against Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield on Saturday to break Rooney's record and become the player with the most goal involvements for one club in the Premier League.

Arne Slot admitted he wants all Liverpool players to defend

Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted that he wants all 11 players on the pitch to be involved in defending and not just the backline. He defended Salah from Rooney's comments, saying that the Egyptian has always done well in dropping back and said (via Liverpool World):

“Both are attacking midfielders (Wirtz and Szoboszlai) and both are expected to defend like all of our 11 players. I heard the comments from Cucurella and saw how they scored the 2-1 but I can also show you the five or six moments where Mo could have made the difference for us. If that had have happened, we would have had the conversation like we did last season where he made the difference so many times for us."

"If that doesn't happen then there are probably comments like this. There is always the balance between winger and full-backs. I want our full-backs to attack as well. We have to find the right balance in that but I said at the start, we are conceding too many crosses compared to last season and it is something that I am aware of so we have to do better.”

Liverpool will be without Mohamed Salah for the next few matches as he has joined the Egypt national side for AFCON.
