United States president Donald Trump said that his son, Barron, is a huge fan of Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo. The 40-year-old is all set to appear in a record sixth FIFA World Cup next summer.

The Selecao qualified for next year's finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada by winning their qualifying group. However, Ronaldo missed the 9-1 home win over Armenia on the final day - which sealed the team's qualification - because of a red-card suspension.

As per the BBC, Ronaldo was set to visit the White House this week as part of a Saudi delegation headed by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. It's pertinent to note that the Portuguese plies his club football in the Kingdom, with Al-Nassr, whom he had joined on a free transfer in December 2022.

After Ronaldo arrived at the White House - reportedly his first trip to the States in nearly a decade - president Trump said that his son, Barron, is a fan of the Portuguese.

"My son is a big fan of @Cristiano. ... Barron got to meet him, and I think he respects his father a little bit more now," Trump said (as per Rapid Response 47).

In a recent interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan (courtesy USA Today), Ronaldo had said about Trump:

“He is one of the guys who can help to change the world. One of the most important guys is the U.S. president. If we can help each other to make this happen."
"He is one of the guys I wish to meet to sit and have a nice talk. If it is here, or in the U.S., wherever he wants, I know he was here in Saudi with our boss MBS. I wish one day to meet him because he is one of the guys who can make things happen and I like people like that.”

Ronaldo is coming off the first red card of his illustrious international career, getting sent off for a foul on Republic of Ireland defender Dara O'Shea in a 2-0 defeat last week in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Dublin.

Cristiano Ronaldo is coming off a successful 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with Portugal. The 40-year-old netted five times in as many outings, including braces against Armenia and Hungary.

Although his final tally in the UEFA World Cup qualifiers was well behind top scorer Erling Haaland (16) of Norway, Ronaldo (41) became the outright most prolific scorer in World Cup qualifying, going past previous record holder Carlos Ruiz (39) in the 2-2 draw with Hungary in qualifying.

A late equaliser by Dominik Szoboszlai - followed by the aforementioned defeat at Ireland - delayed Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.'s qualification. But Roberto Martinez's side punched their ticket to next year's finals with an emphatic dismantling of Armenia on the final day of qualifying to go through.
