Lamine Yamal has found himself at the center of jibes from rival fans following Barcelona’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, November 25. The Catalan teenage sensation was kept under wraps by Blues full-back Marc Cucurella as Barcelona fell further down the UCL table.
Barcelona had VAR to thank, as they could have found themselves trailing by three goals before the half-hour mark. Enzo Fernandez had a four-minute goal chalked off for a handball on Wesley Fofana.
The Argentine found the net again in the 23rd minute, but his strike was ruled out for offside. However, Chelsea kept cranking up the pressure, and their efforts paid off four minutes later when Jules Kounde put the ball in his own net.
Just before halftime, Chelsea were handed a numerical advantage as Ronald Araujo was given his marching orders for a second bookable offense. Six minutes into the second half, Andrey Santos thought he had doubled Chelsea’s lead, but it was also ruled out, as Alejandro Garnacho had strayed offside in the buildup.
The Blues firmly dominated possession, and Estevao Willian deservedly doubled their lead with a stunning solo goal five minutes shy of the hour mark. Substitute Liam Delap came off the bench to add a third, sealing the win.
Yamal, though he had some impact on the game, lost most of his battles with Cucurella. During the 80 minutes he spent on the pitch, he lost possession 21 times, completed only two of five attempted dribbles, and registered only one shot. After the game, rival fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to take aim at the Barcelona star, with one writing:
“Lamine Yamal has more instagram posts than goals this season.”
Another tweeted:
“Yamal should learn to keep quiet.”
“Yamal is too overrated,” a third claimed.
“Yamal is washed. Only plays well against mid teams,” another remarked.
“I didn't even see Yamal in the game,” another chimed in.
“When you beat Barcelona, it is always nice” – Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca after thumping 3-0 win over Hansi Flick’s side
Enzo Maresca was happy with his side’s 3-0 win over Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night. The win marked the Blues’ biggest ever margin of victory over Barca while also becoming the third side to beat the Catalans at least five times in the competition, after Bayern Munich (10) and Paris Saint-Germain (6).
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, Maresca said:
"It is a good win. To be honest, it was no more than that. We knew how important this game was, but they are all important games. When you beat Barcelona, it is always nice so we are happy today."
Chelsea provisionally moved into the top eight, while Barca sit 15th in the league table of the competition.
