Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes the Reds made a mistake by not signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer. He claims that they should have gotten the deal signed before deadline day, but is unsure if they will make another move.
Speaking on the Echo Of Glory podcast, Carragher said Guehi lacks the height Liverpool are looking for a defender, adding that they need to sign two center-backs and not just one when the window reopens. He added that the Crystal Palace star might eventually be signed as a replacement for Konate, while they still need a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
βIβve actually got a theory on Marc Guehi. I think L'pool should have done a deal, and itβs blown up in their face. But when L'pool were going to do the deal for Marc Guehi, it wasnβt to come in and replace Konate, it was to provide competition, and fight for a place. I think with the form of Konate, I think L'pool should be looking for someone to replace Konate and become first-choice, and thatβs different."
βMarc Guehi is a very good centre-back, but heβs not as big as Konate. L'pool have had a problem this season with set-pieces and long throws, so Iβd find it strange to bring in a centre-back smaller than the one youβve got. In general play, Iβm sure he will perform better than Konate, but I donβt know if Liverpoolβs focus will change to someone who is six foot three, six foot four, maybe a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk. Iβm intrigued, Iβm just thinking would Guehi replace Konate rather than provide competition, but I think L'pool need two centre-backs.β
Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Guehi in the summer on deadline day, but Crystal Palace pulled the plug on it in the final hours as they could not get a replacement.
Liverpool target will not sign a new deal at Crystal Palace
Liverpool target Marc Guehi has informed Crystal Palace that he will not be signing a new deal at the club. The Englishman is looking to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, with the Palace manager Oliver Glasner telling the media in October:
"I think Marc has already told us that he doesn't sign a new contract, so he will leave next year. The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, 'no, I want to make something different'. And that's normal. And for us, it's how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that's all about how we are talking together."
Apart from Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also keen on signing Marc Guehi in the summer.
