After a quiet first half, Messi received Jordi Alba's volley with his back to goal. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner cleverly turned and slipped the ball into the path of Mateo Silvetti, who finished well in the bottom corner to make it 3-1 in the 67th minute.

As a result, Lionel Messi garnered his 24th assist this season from 48 appearances across all competitions. The Argentine superstar also broke Puskas' record of 404 career assists, with Pele being third on the podium with 369 (h/t Fabrizio Romano).

Despite being at the age of 38, Lionel Messi has shown no signs of slowing down for Inter Miami as he continues to break impressive records. He has registered 896 goals and 405 assists in 1136 appearances across all competitions in his career (excluding club friendlies). He currently averages an assist every 2.8 games.

"The power of a group is unbreakable" - Javier Mascherano provides verdict after Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami win Eastern Conference title

Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano has credited his players for their unity and form over the past two months following their dominant 5-1 win over New York City FC. Lionel Messi and Co. won the MLS Eastern Conference title at the Chase Stadium, ensuring they qualified for the first MLS Cup final in the club's history.

Mascherano said (via GOAL):

“One always imagines the best when thinking about games - being able to play a great match, dominate, create clear chances. We knew it would be difficult. New York didn’t create chances, and until the 60th minute or so, they were still alive.”

He added:

"The credit is theirs. I’d highlight the last two months - they’ve been incredible. But the merit goes to the players for convincing themselves of where we wanted to go. We’ve reached the end of the season with a brotherhood inside the team, everyone pulling in the same direction, and the power of a group is unbreakable. We’re on the verge of playing the game we dreamed of, at home, with our people.”

Inter Miami will next face Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS Cup final on December 6. The latter defeated the Herons 5-1 on aggregate earlier this season, knocking them out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals.
