Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has become the second Los Blancos star ever to score 53 or more goals in a calendar year, after Cristiano Ronaldo. The Frenchman achieved the feat after finding the back of the net against Girona in the 1-1 draw.
Mbappe continues to break or match Ronaldo's records at the Santiago Bernabeu, and he added another line to his list on Sunday, November 30. While the Frenchman achieved the feat in his first full calendar year at Real Madrid, the Portuguese superstar did so five times in his nine seasons at the club.
The record comes just days after Mbappe joined another exclusive list, becoming one of the four Real Madrid players in history to score four goals in a UEFA Champions League. The former PSG star scored four times in the win over Olympiacos, while the current Al-Nassr captain did it against Malmö in the 2015/16 season.
In the same game, Mbappe broke Ronaldo's record of scoring the fastest hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League for Real Madrid. The 26-year-old needed just seven minutes to score his three goals, while the record stood at 11, set by Ronaldo in the 8-0 win over Malmö in the 2015/16 season.
Mbappe spoke about Ronaldo earlier this season, hailing him as the reference point at Real Madrid. He added that the former Manchester United forward remains his role model and told Movistar in an interview:
"Cristiano has always been a role model for me. I'm lucky enough to talk to him, he gives me advice, he's helped me. I think in Madrid he's still the number one. He's the reference point for Real Madrid players, who's done a lot. The fans still dream about Cristiano. But I want to follow my own path."
Mbappe has 22 goals in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, while also getting three assists under his belt.
Cristiano Ronaldo offered to help Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe
Cristiano Ronaldo spoke to La Sexta earlier this year, revealing that he would have liked to help Kylian Mbappe settle at Real Madrid. He believes that the Frenchman needs to learn how to play upfront and said:
“The forward position makes things a bit complicated for Mbappe, because he doesn't know how to play as a forward in my opinion... It's not that he doesn't know how, it's not his position. If I were at Real Madrid I would teach him to play as a nine. Because I wasn't a striker. I got used to playing as a striker. I used to play on the wing and people forget. Kylian shouldn't be a typical striker. If I were him, I would play more or less like Cristiano Ronaldo plays as a striker.”
Rio Ferdinand offered advice to Kylian Mbappe earlier this season, telling him the only way to reach Cristiano Ronaldo's level at Real Madrid is by turning up in big games.
