Sergio Aguero has backed Florian Wirtz to become a "vital" player for Liverpool. The former Manchester City striker said that different players settle in new places at different times, but backed the German to do well.

The Merseysiders signed Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for a reported fee of £116 million. It was a British transfer record before they broke it again to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £125 million a few weeks later. However, Wirtz has struggled to make a big impact at the club.

In an interview with Stake, Sergio Aguero backed the German midfielder to become good at Liverpool, saying:

"It's hard to give advice. Players have different personalities and their adaptation times vary. Some adapt quickly and others need more time. But I have no doubt he will settle. Great players - and Wirtz is one - sooner or later settle and become vital in their teams."

Wirtz has made 16 appearances across competitions for Liverpool this season, providing three assists. He has failed to provide a single goal contribution in his 11 Premier League appearances.

Didi Hamann on whether Florian Wirtz could leave Liverpool on loan in January

With Florian Wirtz's struggles in the Premier League this season, there have been some calls to send him on loan in January. Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann also said that it could be a possibility. He said that sometimes, if a player takes too long to settle in a new league, he might find it "hard to turn it around".

Hamann said (h/t Mirror):

"Could Florian Wirtz still leave Liverpool on loan in January? Yeah. Obviously with all the help and all the protection from the club and the manager, if you bring somebody in for that amount of money, then maybe he should be the one, even though he's still very young, then maybe you expect him to turn things around. I don't think, the way he's playing at the moment, I'm not sure he's capable of doing that."

"And when I watch him sometimes, you know, thinking, has he lost belief because it is in the Premier League? Sometimes when I watch him when he loses possession, I'm thinking maybe it's because it's a lot quicker, a lot more physical, as if he were to say; 'I'm not sure that's for me'. I hope I'm wrong, but this is how it looks to me. Sometimes if it's going on for too long, you know, it's very hard to turn it around," he added.

Wirtz recorded 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Bayer Leverkusen, helping them win the Bundesliga title, among other honors. His contract with Liverpool, meanwhile, expires in 2030.
