Former Manchester City forward Bradley Wright-Phillips has billed Lionel Messi as 'the best player' over Cristiano Ronaldo. The Englishman believes that the Argentine superstar offers more than just scoring goals in terms of quality.
According to Wright-Phillips, a footballer can't be viewed as the best player just because of his goalscoring prowess. After naming Bayern Munich's Harry Kane as 'the best all-around striker' and Manchester City's Erling Haaland as 'the best goalscorer' during an interview with talkSPORT, the former English attacker said:
"It is not possible to be the best player in the world being just a scorer."
After his statement, Wright-Philips was quizzed on whether Cristiano Ronaldo should also not be regarded as the best player in football history. Responding to the question, the former Manchester City forward gave the title to Lionel Messi. He added:
"Ronaldo? CR7? No, no, come on. Are you one of those people who thinks Ronaldo is better than Messi? For me. It always has to do with the eye test. I think the best player in the world has to look like Messi has to look like (Zinedine) Zidane. There has to be something else there."
Meanwhile, currently playing for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, Cristiano Ronaldo is nearing the 1000-goal milestone. The Portuguese forward has scored 954 goals in his professional career, while Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has bagged 896 since making his senior debut in 2004.
Former Serie A star claims Juventus forward reminds him of Cristiano Ronaldo
Former Juventus and Napoli attacker Emanuele Giaccherini has stated that Kenan Yildiz reminds him of Cristiano Ronaldo. Giaccherini claimed that the Turkish forward has been showing more composure in his playing style, rather than relying on flashy tricks.
Yildiz, who has scored five goals and provided five assists in 17 appearances for Bianconeri this season, has also transitioned from being a winger to playing as a centre-forward. Emanuele Giaccherini, during his appearance on DAZN, said (via Tuttosport):
"Yildiz is changing his style of play because his characteristics are also changing. Last season, Yildiz used to dribble more; now he's more of a striker. He reminds me a bit of Cristiano Ronaldo. For me, he's a complete player."
"He's certainly a top-notch player. He makes the difference and is as decisive as he was in the Champions League (against Bado/Glimt)." he added.
Kenan Yildiz joined the Juventus U19 in July 2022 on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. Later, he made his debut for the senior team of Bianconeri in August 2023. Juventus' 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League last week was the 20-year-old's 100th appearance for the Serie A giants.
