Suarez remained on the bench as Inter Miami beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in the MLS Cup final at Chase Stadium on Saturday, December 6. However, he has been an important member of the squad on and off the pitch. His contract with the Herons expires at the end of this month.

Before Lionel Messi & Co. went into the game, Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas opened up about Suarez's contract situation and said (h/t GOAL):

“Luis Suarez is a legend of football, he is one of the best nines not only of this generation but of all time. Luis will have to make a decision when the season is over, so tomorrow. In terms of the club, I want to say this because I have read a lot about Luis, I'll say it in this context: If in the beginning of the year, they gave us a paper about a center forward that played more than 4000 minutes and scored more than 15/16 goals and 16/17 assists, everyone here would sign that paper to have a forward like that.

“Luis deserves to be able to make that decision to be able to leave through the front door and be celebrated like he should be by the club. And if he decides to stay at the club for another year, it would be great. I would like to see Suárez stay. Obviously, then the conversations would be how Luis Suárez would stay, but obviously we would include Mascherano and Luis, but the decision is up to him,” he added.

Luis Suarez joined the Lionel Messi-led side in January 2024. He's scored 42 goals and provided 29 assists in 87 games across competitions for Inter Miami.

Inter Miami star Luis Suarez opens up on Lionel Messi's reactions to his teammates' performances

In a recent interview, Luis Suarez said that Lionel Messi gets angry when a teammate doesn't perform or score as per his expectations. The Uruguayan striker, who was also teammates with the Argentine at Barcelona, labeled it "unique".

The 38-year-old striker said:

“On the pitch he is something unique, something unrepeatable and he continues to do incredible things. He still has that obsession of wanting to continue winning like we all have. But of course, you see him, that spirit he has. There are times when the team wins but he wanted one of his teammates to score and if he didn’t score, Leo gets angry because that player didn’t score. If he sets the objectives, he achieves them and that rubs off on all of us."

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi have shared the pitch 363 times for Barcelona and Inter Miami, combining for 121 goals. They have won numerous trophies, including a treble with the Spanish giants.
