“I had to be honest” - Ex-Barcelona star Maxi Lopez reveals what he did after old girlfriend asked him to choose her or night outs with Ronaldinho

Former Barcelona forward Maxi Lopez has lifted the lid on what he did when faced with the dilemma of choosing to spend time with his then-girlfriend Wanda Nara or going on night outs with Brazilian maverick Ronaldinho.

Lopez joined Barcelona from River Plate in 2005 and wore the Blaugrana shirt for two-and-a-half seasons. During that period, the Argentine received some off-pitch influence as he would stay out at night with Ronaldinho, who was infamous for his nocturnal lifestyle.

In a video posted on his X account, Lopez explained how Ronaldinho’s spontaneous late-night invitations repeatedly put him in conflict with the Argentine model. He said that when his former girlfriend told him to choose between going to night parties or staying with her, he would get her a ticket, and claimed that choosing to stay with her would have been a ‘huge mistake.’

“‘Let’s go for a walk,’ he would tell me. The next day, at midnight, Ronni called again. You know, my girlfriend started looking at me with angry eyes. And the third time she said: ‘You will have to make a decision, either Ronaldinho or me.” He recalled.

“Between Ronni and her? I would buy her a ticket; I had to be honest. If I had chosen her, I would have made a huge mistake.”

Throughout their time together at Barcelona, Maxi Lopez and Ronaldinho played together 10 times, but had zero joint goal involvements.

Unlike Ronaldinho, Lopez struggled for game time at Barca and spent a season on loan at RCD Mallorca after the Catalan club signed him.

After his loan term expired, which saw him return to Barca, Lopez announced that he was determined to stay at the club and fight for his place. He said in 2007 (via Sky Sports):

“I can triumph in this team," Lopez explained. "Staying at Barcelona is not a question of money, because I have had chances to join other clubs, it is because I am learning so much here. I am anxious to show everyone that I deserve to play. I feel very good and am ready for anything because I have been waiting for an opportunity.

“We are going for three titles,” he continued. “I think that there will be chances for everyone. I am delighted with the support that I have had from the players and the coaching staff. The board and coaches have always left the decision about my future down to me, which is a gesture that I am very grateful for. I have learnt so much. I just want to keep on taking everything in at the moment and am only thinking about Barcelona.”

Maxi Lopez made 19 appearances for Barcelona, scored two goals, and provided three assists.
