Liverpool fans have unleashed their anger on defender Joe Gomez in the aftermath of their EFL Cup defeat to Crystal Palace. The Reds crashed out of the competition following a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Eagles at Anfield.
Reds boss Arne Slot opted to switch things up as his side came up against regular foes Crystal Palace in the Round of 16 of the cup. He made ten changes to the XI that lost to Brentford last week, with the likes of Gomez, Federico Chiesa, and several youngsters receiving the nod to start.
Slot saw his side fall to a third successive defeat against Palace, having also lost to them in the Community Shield in August and the Premier League earlier this season. Liverpool fans were far from happy with the result, but they were more unhappy with the performance of former Charlton Athletic man Gomez. A section of the fans took to X to call out the Englishman for his poor display.
A fan pointed out that Gomez showed that he can be worse for the side than Ibrahima Konate.
Another fan asked how the Englishman remains on the books of the Reds despite his performances.
A fan referred to the game as one of the worst they have ever seen Gomez play.
A fan admitted that Gomez has been 'finished' for a while and stated the obvious need for a new CB.
Another fan referred to the 28-year-old as being fit for the Championship, England's second tier.
A fan made a mockery of Gomez for having a hand in all three goals his side conceded on the night.
Joe Gomez made his sixth appearance of the campaign for Arne Slot's side, featuring for the full 90 minutes against Palace. The England international failed to clear the ball in the build up to the opener for the visitors in the first half. He made eight clearances, five ball recoveries, and two blocks for his side in a vain effort at home.
Liverpool woes continue with Crystal Palace defeat
Liverpool suffered a fifth successive domestic defeat this season following a 3-0 humbling at the hands of Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup. The Reds lost for only the second time at home this season, having also lost to Manchester United in their last home game.
Arne Slot's much-changed side went behind at home to an Ismaila Sarr effort in the 41st minute. The visitors doubled their lead just four minutes later when Sarr scored his fifth goal in as many games against the Reds in his career, sending Palace into the break two goals up.
Liverpool held off the Eagles in the second half but were reduced to ten men in the 79th minute when substitute Amara Nallo received a straight red card for a last man foul. Crystal Palace rounded off the scoring in the 88th minute with Yeremi Pino scoring his first goal for the club.
