Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring in the first minute for the Merseysiders before scoring another in the 60th minute. Meanwhile, Wirtz didn't score or assist but put in a good performance against Brighton. He completed 36/42 passes, including three key passes, completed 2/3 dribble attempts, won 9/12 duels, and 4/4 tackles (via SofaScore).

Liverpool fans were pleased with his performance and heaped praise on him on X (formerly Twitter). One user wrote:

"Wirtz is controlling the game again and he's been playing insane so far. It feels like everything is starting to click. His teammates seem to finally understand his playstyle and the chemistry between him and his teammates is becoming stronger and stronger"

Liverpool signed Wirtz for a whopping £116 million from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer. It was a British record fee before they broke it a few weeks later, signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £125 million.

Wirtz, meanwhile, struggled to make a big impact initially and has recorded just five assists in 20 games across competitions for the club.

Arne Slot shares thoughts on Liverpool's win over Brighton

The Reds came into the game on the back of a 1-0 win over Inter Milan at San Siro in the UEFA Champions League on December 9. They were unbeaten in four games and looked to continue the streak.

Liverpool got an excellent start as a Brighton mistake helped Hugo Ekitike score within one minute of kick-off. They had more chances but failed to convert them before the French striker scored in the 60th minute, heading in from a corner.

After the game, Arne Slot said (h/t Anfield Sector):

“Very pleased. You can say today what it means for the players if you have to play 4 games in 10 days at the intensity levels of the PL and UCL. It was a great game to watch. You can see the problems we had during the game.“

With the win, Liverpool moved to sixth place in the Premier League, but could slip down after this gameweek's fixtures are over. They will next face Tottenham Hotspur away on December 20.
