Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has urged the club to re-sign Danny Welbeck in January. He believes the Englishman could provide good competition to the likes of Benjamin Sesko.
Welbeck came through Manchester United's academy and made 142 appearances for them, recording 29 goals and 16 assists. He failed to make a big impact and could never find a consistent starting place in the team. He then joined Arsenal in 2014 before moving to Watford five years later. He then joined Brighton & Hove Albion the following year.
Meanwhile, Manchester United signed Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in the summer. Louis Saha believes the Red Devils should re-sign Welbeck to provide competition to the 22-year-old striker. He told Pundit Arena:
"I would have loved Manchester United to sign Danny at the start of the season. He’s not just very talented, but he’s very efficient and he’s experienced. When I came to the club, there was Van Nistelrooy and Solskjaer, but we had more than that. We had Tevez and Alan Smith, and there was depth, there was a variety. We all learned from each other."
"I think Sesko and other forward players would benefit by having someone like Welbeck to challenge them, to make them learn more about the game, more about positioning. Welbeck’s experience would give an example for them to all learn from, and I think if Danny arrives in the winter transfer window, he could make a huge difference to results on the pitch," he added.
Welbeck has scored 44 goals and provided 17 assists in 178 games for Brighton, including seven goals in 15 Premier League games this season.
Wayne Rooney shares thoughts on Benjamin Sesko's start at Manchester United
The Red Devils signed Sesko from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of £74 million. It comes after they had spent £72 million on Rasmus Hojlund in 2023, who is now on loan at Napoli. Sesko, meanwhile, had recorded just two goals and one assist in 12 games across competitions for Manchester United.
Club legend Wayne Rooney shared his thoughts on Sesko's performances this season. He said on The Overlap Fan Debate:
"I think with Benjamin Sesko he's going through a tough time currently, in terms of goals. But I think his overall play has been good. [Meanwhile,] Senne Lammens has come in and done well. He's been more direct into Sesko, and what we're seeing is his ability to hold the ball and link the play, which is better than Rasmus Hojlund.
"We're seeing as the ball goes up to him, the forward players are running in behind as they know he'll compete and win flick-ons. He's been better than what people have been suggesting, but I think he needs to start scoring more. I think he'll improve and come good for United," he added.
Sesko is currently out injured, but Manchester United, meanwhile, are sixth in the Premier League standings. They will next host Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday, December 15.
