Manchester United legend and pundit Roy Keane has hit out at Red Devils midfielder Mason Mount for his performance in their game against West Ham. The Red Devils failed to win in front of their fans for a second successive week, playing out a 1-1 draw against the Hammers.
Keane was on punditry duty with Sky Sports and ripped into the Manchester United squad for a lack of quality, singling out Mount. The former midfielder likened the Englishman to a schoolboy, insinuating that he looked lost after his introduction into the game.
"When you look at the squad, considering the money that has been spent, they lack strength in depth. Particularly in the attacking areas. When you are trying to see a game off, I look at Mason Mount when he came on, some players take longer to get up to speed but he was like a schoolboy out there. Youβre looking for players to come on with presence. If anything they brought the levels down at United. That seemed to be the case tonight", he said (via metro.co.uk).
Mason Mount started on the bench despite his heroics in the win over Crystal Palace last weekend. The 26-year-old was introduced in the 78th minute for Joshua Zirkzee, but failed to provide a spark for his side in another uninspiring showing at home.
Manchester United lost at home to the ten men of Everton in their previous home game prior to facing the Hammers. They were pegged back late by Nuno Espirito Santo's side, and are in eighth place in the Premier League, as a result.
Plucky West Ham hold Manchester United at Old Trafford
Relegation-threatened West Ham United showed their fighting spirit as they played Manchester United to a standstill in their Premier League meeting at Old Trafford. The game between both sides ended in a 1-1 draw, with both teams scoring in the second period.
Ruben Amorim's side came closest to scoring in the first half, with Bryan Mbeumo forcing Alphonse Areola into a stunning stop and Aaron Wan-Bissaka clearing a Zirkzee effort off the line. Bruno Fernandes also grazed the woodwork as the Red Devils were marginally better despite the half ending without any goals.
The home side went ahead in the 58th minute when Diogo Dalot scored a league goal at Old Trafford for the first time in his career. They failed to hold on to the result and were pegged back in the 83rd minute when Soungoutou Magassa fired home his first-ever goal for the Hammers to steal a point.
