Real Madrid fans have hit out at Arda Guler for his performance during their LaLiga match against Deportivo Alaves. The young winger had a quiet outing as Los Blancos returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory at Mendizorroza on Sunday.
Eager to end a poor streak, Real Madrid made a strong start, with Kylian Mbappe registering the first shot of the night after four minutes. The Frenchman made sure it went in on his third attempt midway through the first half, when he received Jude Bellingham’s pass, cut inside, and curled his effort past Antonio Sivera.
Shortly after, Bellingham thought he had doubled Real Madrid’s lead, but his goal was ruled out as he was adjudged to have controlled the ball with his hand in the build-up.
While Xabi Alonso’s side continued to dictate proceedings after the restart, Alaves made flashes of brilliance, and out of nowhere, the hosts equalized. Substitute Carlos Vicente made an instant impact just seconds after his introduction, taking Antonio Blanco’s raking pass in his stride and placing the ball beyond Thibaut Courtois’ reach.
Just when it seemed like the visitors were destined for another frustrating night, Vinicius Junior combined with Rodrygo to restore Real Madrid’s lead. Alaves fought for an equalizer late on, but Los Blancos held on.
In the 78 minutes he spent on the pitch, Guler contributed little in attack, lost possession six times, and received a match rating of 6.9, according to Sofascore. After the match, fans took to X to criticize his display.
One wrote:
“Arda Güler is a liability to this squad so so weak physically, loses the marker easily, doesn't track back, easy to get past. He puts literally 0 efforts in winning the ball back.”
Another suggested that the Turkish youngster should be sold:
“If we want to progress in the future, Arda Guler has to be sold. He has no future at this club.”
A third added:
“Whatever Xabi Alonso is trying to do with Guler, it's not working, it's been evident throughout the season. Bro needs to let it go.”
Another remarked:
“Arda Guler needs to learn how to be decisive. This is the reason Endrick supersedes.”
“Arda Guler isn't a starter in this team,” a fan chimed in.
Real Madrid close gap at the top of the table after Alaves win
Real Madrid reduced the gap between them and leaders Barcelona to four points after defeating Alaves on Sunday as the title race heats up. Barcelona beat Osasuna 2-0 at the Camp Nou on Saturday to open a seven-point lead.
Villarreal sit behind Los Blancos, four points adrift, but the Yellow Submarine have two games in hand and could overtake Madrid if they win both. The victory over Alaves marked Madrid’s third win in their last nine matches across all competitions.
