Dominik Szoboszlai earned the praise of fans for his performance during Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan on Wednesday. The Hungarian midfielder emerged as the Reds’ knight in shining armor, scoring the only goal of the game to give his side a much-needed 1-0 win in San Siro.
Ahead of kickoff, Mohamed Salah’s absence was the major talking point, with the Egyptian completely omitted from the squad for his post-match outburst after Saturday’s 3-3 draw against Leeds United. In addition to that, the pressure was piling up on Arne Slot, as his Liverpool side had won only one of their previous six matches prior to the Inter clash.
Eager to turn an unwanted form around, the reigning Premier League champions made a strong start, with Curtis Jones forcing Yann Sommer into action in the opening 20 minutes. Just after the half-hour mark, Ibrahima Konate thought he had given Liverpool the lead, but his goal was ruled out for a handball by Hugo Ekitike.
After a goalless first half, Liverpool were handed a lifeline in the closing stages when Alessandro Bastoni was adjudged to have fouled Florian Wirtz in the area after a shirt pull. Szoboszlai assumed responsibility and converted the resulting spot kick, which ultimately proved to be the match-winner.
In addition to his goal, Szoboszlai also put in an impressive shift on the night. The 25-year-old made two clearances, three recoveries, and received a match rating of 7.2, according to Sofascore. After the match, happy Liverpool fans took to X to laud his display, with one writing:
“Szobo just saved Slot’s job.”
Another tweeted:
“Where we would be without Szobo. Some penalty 🤌.”
A third added:
“SZOBO MY GUY I F**KING LOVE YOU.”
“Everyone needs a Szobo in their life,” another chimed in.
“Szobo has been the absolute fella this season yeno! We'd be even more fucked than we already are without him,” a fan claimed.
The result meant the Merseysiders climbed from 13th to eighth in the table.
“It was a huge result for all of us” – Andy Robertson on Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Inter Milan
Andy Robertson was delighted after his side arrested their slide with a 1-0 win against Inter Milan. Speaking after the game, the Scot admitted that it was a much-needed win and emphasized the importance of Champions League football for the club. He told reporters:
“We all needed [the win]. We know the results and performances aren't good enough. It's important this club is in the Champions League. It was a huge result for all of us.”
The Reds will look to build on their win when they face Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday, December 13.
