Real Madrid fans have called for manager Xabi Alonso to be relieved of his duties after his side's showing in the Super Cup final. Los Blancos succumbed to a 3-2 defeat in Jeddah as Barcelona beat them to a fourth successive domestic trophy.
Alonso was appointed as Real Madrid boss at the end of the 2024-25 season after predecessor Carlo Ancelotti failed to win any silverware. The former Bayer Leverkusen boss has endured a mixed start to life at the Bernabeu, with many of the club's fans yet to be sold on his management.
Xabi Alonso had the chance to pick up a first piece of silverware as Real Madrid boss in the Spanish Super Cup, having defeated Atletico Madrid in the semi-final. His side failed to win the trophy as they lost 3-2 to their bitter rivals in the final.
Their fans considered Alonso's decision to substitute Vinicius Jr in the second half to be the turning point in the game, and they made their thoughts known. A section of the fans took to X to call out the Spanish tactician, asking that he be sacked.
A fan called for his immediate sacking, comparing him to Rafael Benitez.
Another fan questioned the logic behind his substitutions, asking that he leaves the club.
A fan admitted that while it was not the sole reason for their defeat, taking off Vinicius Jr was a sackable offence.
Another fan pointed out that the defeat is on Alonso, and he has to go.
A fan referred to the manager as the worst thing to happen to the club.
Xabi Alonso remains under pressure at the Bernabeu but is unlikely to be relieved of his duties after this defeat to La Blaugrana. His side remain four points adrift of Barcelona in LaLiga at the halfway point of the season.
Barcelona down Real Madrid in Super Cup final
Barcelona overcame rivals Real Madrid in a five-goal thriller as both sides faced off in the Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah. La Blaugrana picked up a third Super Cup title in four seasons and a second in as many seasons under Hansi Flick.
Raphinha opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 36th minute before Vinicius Jr levelled matters with a sensational solo goal in the second minute of stoppage time. Robert Lewandowski restored the lead for Flick's side with a fine finish two minutes later before Gonzalo Garcia equalised once more for Real Madrid before halftime.
Barcelona reclaimed their advantage midway through the second half as Raphinha's deflected effort went in for the winner. They finished the game with ten players as captain Frenkie De Jong was shown a straight red card for a foul on Kylian Mbappe in stoppage time.
