Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has hit out at Ruben Amorim for his treatment of Kobbie Mainoo. He wants to see the youngster getting more chances, stating that the midfielder should leave the club.
Amorim spoke to the media earlier this week, saying he sees Mainoo as a player capable of starting, but backed Casemiro to start ahead of him. He added that his focus is on winning matches, and does not see who is starting, and said (via Daily Mail):
"I see him as a starter like the other players. I just have to make a choice and then in the end, it's not been Kobbie. In the future, I don't know. Again, I always think the same thing with Casemiro. [He] was not playing and then he plays. I just want to win games. I don't care who is playing."
Scholes shared the quote on his Instagram story and slammed the manager. The legendary midfielder said he hates seeing academy stars leave, but would understand if Mainoo opted to leave. He posted:
"Bulls***! The kid is being ruined, not being played in a team that can't control a game of football. Hate seeing home grown players leave but it's probably best for him now, enough is enough."
Mainoo has played just 292 minutes for Manchester United this season in all competitions, starting once in the Carabao Cup and coming off the bench in nine Premier League matches.
Manchester United legend wants to see Kobbie Mainoo playing
Manchester United legend Nicky Butt also spoke about Kobbie Mainoo in November, saying that the youngster would have been a target for the Red Devils if he were playing for Crystal Palace.
He believes that every top club in the Premier League would be pushing to sign him, while Amorim is not giving him chances at Old Trafford and said on Sky Sports:
“I’m worried about him because he’s a superstar. He’s got to the England team at 18/19. He was one of the best performers in the Euros for us. He’s come through the academy at Man United from the age of seven. He was there when I was there as academy manager. I know him as a person. I knew him as a young boy. I know him as a young man. I know the talent that he’s got."
“And the scary thing for me is if Kobbie Mainoo was playing for Crystal Palace, for example, if he was at any other football club, bar Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, where it’s hard to get players out of, Man United would be in for him in January for 50 [or] 60 million. And it’s sad because I know how much he loves football.“
Mainoo played 3141 minutes under Erik ten Hag in his 44 appearances for Manchester United. He has played just 1714 minutes under Ruben Amorim in his 38 appearances.
