Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has expressed his feelings about being excluded from Vinicius Jr's apology statement after a 2-1 win over bitter rivals Barcelona (October 26). The Brazilian forward made a social media post after being caught in a controversial tussle with the Blaugrana players after a fiery El Clasico matchup.
French superstar Kylian Mbappe's strike (22') was nullified by Fermin Lopez's equalizer (38'). Just minutes later, star midfielder Jude Bellingham, who set up Real Madrid's opener, prodded his side ahead (42'), and Los Blancos held on for a hard-fought Bernabeu victory.
Vinicius was visibly frustrated after being substituted in the 72nd minute of the game, immediately heading down the tunnel without shaking Alonso's hand. Soon, he returned to the bench; however, after the full-time whistle, he tried to confront Barcelona's Lamine Yamal during a huge scuffle.
A few hours after the game, the 25-year-old posted an apology on X which had no mention of Alonso. It read (via BBC):
"Today I want to apologise to all the Madridistas for my reaction when I was substituted in the Clasico. Just as I have already done in person during today's training, I also want to apologise again to my team-mates, the club, and the president.
"Sometimes passion gets the better of me because I always want to win and help my team. My competitive character stems from the love I feel for this club and everything it represents."
When asked about his omission from the star winger's statement, Alonso said (via MadridXtra on X):
"It was a very valuable, very positive statement. He demonstrated his honesty, he spoke from the heart. The most important thing is what he said, and I was very satisfied. The matter was closed on Wednesday (October 29)."
Up next, Real Madrid will be seen in action in their LaLiga fixture against Valencia on Saturday (November 1).
"It's unacceptable" - Former Spain star lashes out at Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr for 'self-centred' apology statement
Former Atletico Madrid and Spain midfielder Gabi chastised Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr for his 'self-centred' apology statement after the Merengues' 2-1 win over Barcelona (October 26).
Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, the 42-year-old said (via Football Espana):
"It's what I hate most about the footballer: the gestures, the fuss, being tested in public… everything you want but behind closed doors. Obviously, as soon as the game is over you have to talk to him, he can't let time pass, let him make a statement and the only one he doesn't name is the coach. It's unacceptable, it's a self-centred thing for me."
Gabi asserted that the team is always bigger than any singular player. Interestingly, however, he claimed that there is only one exception to the rule - Argentina and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, adding that Vini 'has a problem'.
The Spaniard said:
"The collective is always above something individual, unless your name is Messi. (Vinicius) has a problem."
With just one loss in their first ten league fixtures (nine wins), Real Madrid currently sit atop LaLiga (27 points), five points clear of archrivals Barcelona.
