Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has reportedly beaten Cristiano Ronaldo to a goal record. The Napoli midfielder turned heads after scoring a spectacular overhead kick against Denmark in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which has now drawn parallels to one of Ronaldo's iconic strikes.

Scotland secured a slot in next year's FIFA World Cup after an impressive 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park on Tuesday, November 18. In what was a make-or-break encounter, the Scots delivered a memorable performance, ensuring their first appearance at the Mundial since 1998.

McTominay kick-started this historic achievement after giving Scotland the lead three minutes into the clash with an acrobatic finish. With his back against the goal post, the 28-year-old leaped high to connect to Ben Doak's cross, finishing off with a bicycle kick that sent the fans into a frenzy.

The goal reminded fans of Ronaldo's stunning overhead kick against Juventus in the quarterfinal of the 2017/18 Champions League season. Both goals have now been compared to determine who jumped higher.

According to an X user @David_Rudnick (via The Sun), McTominay recorded a higher leap than Ronaldo. While the Portuguese produced his stunning kick with a height of 2.38 meters (7ft 7in), the Scotsman reportedly hit the ball at a height of 2.53 meters (8ft 3in).

The fan made his measurements using the diameter of a 22cm regulation Adidas football. He put 11 and a bit footballs on top of one another in the photo to calculate an estimated height for the point of contact.

When Scott McTominay weighed in on the GOAT debate between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi

Back in 2020, Scott McTominay gave his thoughts on the never-ending GOAT debate between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Napoli star, who had yet to share the dressing room with Ronaldo at the time, named Messi as the better player, saying via SportBible:

"Messi or Ronaldo? Messi with no shadow of a doubt — I've never seen a football player like it in my life. He's absolutely ridiculous. I've played against him and you try and rough him up or you try to get close and it's so, so difficult."

McTominay, a graduate of Manchester United's academy, registered 29 goals and eight assists in 255 matches for the Red Devils before leaving for Napoli in 2024. Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, recorded 145 goals and 72 assists in 346 games across two spells for the Manchester club.
