Arsenal fans were left in awe of Bukayo Saka’s performance during their Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. The Englishman stole the show as the Gunners secured a dramatic 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.
As expected, Arsenal started strongly, with Jurrien Timber coming close to scoring in the eighth minute. While Mikel Arteta’s side dictated proceedings, it was Wolves who had the game’s first shot on target in the 27th minute.
The visitors seemed determined to pull an upset as they sat deep, leaving the league leaders with the uphill task of breaking a resolute defense. Arsenal kept probing, but their failure to register a shot on target in the first 45 minutes meant both sides went into the break goalless.
The Gunners started the second half with the same theme as the first, and when it seemed like they were destined for another frustrating night, luck shone their way in the 70th minute. The north Londoners fortuitously took the lead as Saka’s inswinging corner struck the far post and went in off the back of Sam Johnstone.
Momentum was with Wolves in the closing stages, and substitute Tolu Arokodare restored parity with a towering header in stoppage time. There was still time for another dramatic moment as Yerson Mosquera’s own goal deep into added time handed Arsenal all three points.
While Saka wasn’t on the scoresheet, the 24-year-old was involved in both goals and pretty much single-handedly gave his side a much-needed win that provisionally extended their lead to five points at the top of the table. After the match, elated Gunners supporters took to X to heap praise on the winger, with one writing:
“Saka literally carried the team on his back tonight. He said he wasn't leaving that pitch without 3 points.”
Another tweeted:
“Saka hasn’t had one unsuccessful action this whole game what am I watching.”
A third added:
“It’s really a one-man army out here with Saka.”
A fan remarked:
“Also? Saka is world class. Keep your TikToks. Keep your agenda. Idc. I know what he is. And he’s irreplaceable.”
“Today, it went our way” – Bukayo Saka on Arsenal’s late 2-1 win over Wolves
Arsenal talisman Bukayo Saka admitted that they didn’t have an easy game against a rock-bottom Wolves side, suggesting that ‘luck’ is sometimes needed to win matches. Speaking after the game, Saka told TNT Sports:
“Yes, sometimes you need it [luck]. Today, it went our way. We will take the points and move forward. We won't know until May, but we can be happy tonight that we left with three points. Coming to the Emirates we want to make the teams know that it is going to be tough here and it is not going to be an easy game. It was frustrating at times, I'll be honest. The message to the boys was to stay patient and trying things - in the end we got our reward. It is high [morale] and we have a break now up until next week.”
So far this season, Saka has scored seven goals and provided two assists for the Gunners in 20 appearances across all competitions.
