Cardiff City striker Callum Robinson has indicated his excitement at facing Chelsea after both teams were drawn against one another in the EFL Cup. The Blues secured a place in the last eight of the competition following a nervy 4-3 win over Wolves, while Cardiff overcame Wrexham.
Chelsea have avoided Premier League opposition in the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup as they are set to face third-tier Cardiff City for a semi-final spot. The tie is of interest to 30-year-old Irishman Robinson, and he shared his anticipation of the clash via a post on X.
"Chelsea it is 👀👀😂😂😂", he posted.
Callum Robinson has an exceptional record against Chelsea in his career after representing West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United, and Aston Villa against them. The striker has yet to taste defeat in three appearances against the Blues, scoring five times for his various teams.
Robinson first came up against the Blues as an Aston Villa player in the 2013-14 season but did not come off the bench as his side won 1-0. He played against them for the first time in the 2019-20 season, scoring as his Sheffield United side held them to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
The following season, Robinson, now of West Brom, scored a brace in the 3-3 draw against the Blues with Frank Lampard in charge. The Ireland international repeated the feat against Thomas Tuchel's side that went on to win the UEFA Champions League, scoring twice in a 5-2 win at Stamford Bridge for the Baggies.
Enzo Maresca's team will hope to be the first Blues team to inflict a defeat on Callum Robinson. They will face another familiar face in loanee Omari Kellyman, who could receive permission to play against his parent club in the game.
10-man Chelsea defeat Wolves in EFL Cup thriller
Chelsea edged Wolves in their EFL Cup last-16 clash at the Molineux, claiming a 4-3 win despite going down to ten players. The Blues secured a quarterfinal meeting with League One Cardiff City after their win over Premier League opposition.
Enzo Maresca's side raced into a three-goal lead in the first half thanks to efforts from Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, and Estevao Willian. They were pegged back at the start of the second half by goals from Tolu Arokodare and David Moller Wolfe as Wolves fought back.
The Blues were reduced to ten men when Liam Delap, on his return from a two-month layoff, was given his marching orders for two bookable offences. They managed to score a fourth goal through Jamie Gittens before conceding to Wolfe once more. They survived a late onslaught from their hosts to book their place in the last eight of the competition.
