Manchester United star Leny Yoro recently thanked head coach Ruben Amorim for a squad clear-out in the summer. He said they don't need bad characters and drama, adding that they are focused on the team and good things.
Amorim was appointed the Red Devils' head coach in October 2024 and oversaw his first summer transfer window at the club this summer. This saw the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho leave, either permanently or on loan.
In a recent interview, Leny Yoro thanked Amorim for the clearout, as he appeared to take a dig at his former Manchester United teammates, saying (h/t GOAL):
"The character is really important, for the atmosphere of the team also. I think the club is doing well with this, to take only people who can bring good things to the team. We don't want any bad things in the team. It's really important for us."
"So, like you said, try to be focused on the team. Don't do any drama. Just speak with everyone, have a good relation. This is the best, I think, for the team. We cannot build something with bad energy or bad atmosphere or bad characters. I think the club is doing well with this," he added.
Manchester United signed Yoro from LOSC for a reported fee of €62 million + a potential €8 million in add-ons in 2024. He has recorded 43 appearances for them and also contributed one goal and two assists.
Ruben Amorim explains difference between Manchester United now and the one that lost in Europa League final
Manchester United are set to face Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday, November 8. The Red Devils, notably, lost all four games against Spurs across competitions last season, including three under Ruben Amorim. The biggest of them was the 1-0 defeat in the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao.
In his pre-match press conference, Amorim was asked if his Manchester United side is different now, and he answered (h/t manutd.com):
“First of all, the characteristics of the players. We have different characteristics in our team but we also have a lot of players that played last year. So we are a better team, we play better, we understand the game better. I think we are more confident.
"We reached that final confident that we could win because we were doing well in Europe, but in this moment we play with a different confidence. We managed better the moments of the game, but if you remember that game they had that [one] shot on the goal, they won the game. I expect a different game, that we can play better but also to have a little bit of luck to help us win the game,” he added.
Manchester United are eighth in the Premier League after 10 games, level on points with sixth-placed Tottenham. They are only behind on goal difference, with Chelsea sandwiched between the two sides.
