Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has heaped huge praise on his players after Lionel Messi's team beat Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit New York City FC 5-1 earlier this Saturday.

Messi's side secured a spot in the MLS Cup for the first time in their history after a thrilling display at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While Tadeo Allende bagged a hat-trick, Mateo Silvetti and Telasco Segovia netted a goal each against New York City.

Following Inter Miami's Eastern Conference glory, Mascherano was asked to offer his thoughts on his team's performance against New York City. He responded (h/t GOAL):

"One always imagines the best when thinking about games... being able to play a great match, dominate, create clear chances. We knew it would be difficult. New York City didn't create chances, and until the 60th minute or so, they were still alive."

Lauding his players for their hard work and for believing in the project, he added:

"The credit is theirs. I'd highlight the last two months... they've been incredible. But the merit goes to the players for convincing themselves of where we wanted to go. We've reached the end of the season with a brotherhood inside the team, everyone pulling in the same direction, and the power of a group is unbreakable. We're on the verge of playing the game we dreamed of, at home, with our people."

Mascherano also acknowledged predecessor Gerardo Martino's impact, saying:

"I think it would be unfair not to recognize what Gerardo Martino did. He was the first to give this team its identity. A Leagues Cup, competing for the Supporters' Shield... the desire to compete and lift the club to another level kept growing. Beyond the big signings we made, you need players with hierarchy."

How well has Lionel Messi fared in 2025?

Lionel Messi has unsurprisingly proved to be a excellent arrival for Inter Miami. He helped the Herons win the Leagues Cup in 2023 before lifting the MLS Supporters' Shield last year.

In 2025, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has been in stellar form for his club. The Argentine registered 29 goals and 16 assists in 28 league games before recording six goals and five assists in five MLS Cup playoffs matches.

Messi, whose Inter Miami deal will run out in December 2028, will next be in action for his club in the MLS Cup final against Vancouver Whitecaps next Saturday.
