Vinicius Jr and Lamine Yamal had to be held back as tempers flared after Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Sunday’s El Clasico. The match, played at the Santiago Bernabeu, reached a boiling point in the final stages as players from both teams came to blows.
Yamal's off-field remarks, in which he accused Real Madrid of stealing and complaining days before the match, were bound to escalate tensions. The young winger’s remarks reportedly got the Real Madrid dressing room upset, with Marca reporting that the players in the Spanish capital were ‘fed up’ with his persistent goading.
It was unsurprising that Real Madrid players ensured he didn't get on the scoresheet. The Whites could even have won by a larger margin on the night, thanks to Wojciech Szczesny’s brilliance between the sticks.
The flashpoint of the chaotic encounter came when Pedri received a second yellow card for a tackle on Aurelien Tchouaméni, reducing Barcelona to 10 men. Suddenly, a fracas broke out in the dugout between the players from both sides. After the full-time whistle, Los Blancos captain Dani Carvajal and Lamine Yamal had an animated exchange. Carvajal appeared to walk away, and Lamal attempted to follow him, but Eduardo Camavinga intervened.
Yamal’s response appeared to anger Thibaut Courtois, who went to get involved in the carnage, pushing the teenager, but Casado quickly intervened. As Yamal was ushered away by his teammates, Vinicius approached him and appeared to say something to him. Yamal also responded and made a gesture, prompting Vini to try to run off the pitch, but he was held back. According to Madrid Xtra, Yamal told Vini:
“Let’s go hit each other.”
To which Vini replied:
“Let’s go.”
During the match, the pair were also spotted exchanging words, with reports claiming Vini taunted Yamal, saying:
"Nothing but back passes, huh? Just passing it back to the defenders."
“It wasn’t an easy game for him” – Barcelona assistant manager Marcus Song on Lamine Yamal after 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid
Marcus Song stood in for manager Hansi Flick, who was suspended due to a red card received last week. After the match, Song defended Yamal, telling reporters:
"It wasn't easy for him today. We spoke at half-time, we told him we needed him one-on-one, but he didn't have many chances. They defended well, they tried everything to stop him, and we have to accept that. He was fine, but the injury he sustained [earlier in the season] was serious, and he needs more games to be at his best.
"We have to give him time and help him, together, so he can get back to his best. The opponents were looking for Lamine and creating two-on-ones to stop him from going inside the box or finishing. He's young and needs to improve, and we'll help him. Maybe the atmosphere at the Bernabeu affected him; he's also learning from everything it creates. He's very motivated and played well. But it wasn't an easy game for him."
Real Madrid have now extended their lead at the top of the table, while Barcelona trail them by five points.
