Manchester United fans have singled out Manuel Ugarte for criticism following his performance during the Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur. Many believed the midfielder was at fault for Spurs’ two late goals as United fought for a 2-2 draw in north London.

The early exchanges were quite cagey, as neither side was able to register a shot on target by the half-hour mark. Manchester United took the lead two minutes later after Spurs failed to clear their lines when playing inside their own box. Amad Diallo’s cross found Bryan Mbeumo, who steered an excellent header in at the near post.

Tottenham’s failure to register a shot on target in the first 45 minutes meant United took their slender lead into the break. The hosts started the second half dictating proceedings and could have gone ahead before the hour mark, but goalkeeper Senne Lemmens kept United’s lead intact, denying Christian Romero and Joao Palhinha in quick succession.

The game was turned on its head in the closing stages as Tottenham scored two goals inside seven minutes, courtesy of Mathys Tel and Richarlison. Spurs thought they had won it, but Matthijs de Ligt grabbed a dramatic equalizer in the sixth minute of stoppage time to stretch United’s unbeaten run in the league to five matches.

Ugarte, who came on for Casemiro in the 72nd minute, was culpable in the two late goals United conceded. He allowed Pape Sarr to run past him for the equalizer and played Richarlison onside for the Spurs’ second. After the match, fans took to X to criticize him, with one writing:

”Today was our day to win this game” – Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim on 2-2 draw with Spurs

Ruben Amorim pulled no punches while assessing his team’s performance in their 2-2 draw with Tottenham. The Portuguese coach expressed his disappointment with Manchester United's lack of intensity and bravery in putting the game to bed. Amorim told TNT Sports:

Ad
"When you cannot win you don't lose, once again we did that. We have so much to grow as a team, because today was our day to win this game. We need to look at ourselves, we were not pressing with the same intensity, we felt comfortable but we need to understand that if we had more bravery we kill the game. But sometimes this happens, you have a better first half than second. We believe in our capacity to score goals until the last minute."

The result meant Manchester United now sit temporarily in seventh in the Premier League table.
