Arsene Wenger issues warning as he responds to Mikel Arteta confirming that Arsenal use AI for tactics

Legendary Premier League manager Arsene Wenger has issued a warning to Mikel Arteta after the Arsenal coach admitted using artificial intelligence (AI) for tactics after the Premier League draw against Sunderland. The Frenchman believes it is good to use technology to help, but warned that it should not become the go-to tool.

Wenger wants managers to continue relying on their instincts, even if AI is recommending the opposite. He has urged coaches using AI, including Arsenal's Arteta, to keep control of their decisions and not get overpowered and said (via Metro):

"It can help to make better decisions. AI has a fantastic quality, it can absorb millions of different situations and give you an answer in one second or a fraction of a second. AI can say something and the personality of a coach can say that’s wrong.

"As long as the human being keeps control, authority, and power to make the decision, you can use any scientific tool. But what is happening and what is dangerous is if the science dominates the decisions.’

Seattle Reign coach, Laura Harvey, also confirmed earlier this season that she uses ChatGPT for her tactics. The NWSL coach said that she has been using the AI tool to make decisions.

Mikel Arteta admits using AI for Arsenal tactics against Sunderland

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta spoke about AI tools ahead of the Sunderland game, admitting he uses them to build his tactics. He added that they provide valuable insights and help him better understand the game.

The Arsenal manager said (via GOAL):

“It’s a tool that is super powerful if you use it in the right way and you ask the right questions. It’s in use already for many things and many processes that can help not just a team but an organisation as well. It will improve and it will give us good insight, or things at least to think about. I’m not an expert but it’s a valuable tool.

“We have developed certain things that in our opinion can help us to understand ourselves better and evaluate what we do and what we can improve. And then we will explore using it in many other areas of the club.”

Arsenal are on top of the Premier League table after 11 matches, with 26 points. They are trophyless for the last five seasons, but have finished 2nd in the last three Premier League seasons, behind Manchester City twice and Liverpool last season.
