Liverpool manager Arne Slot has hinted that Mohamed Salah needs to apologize for his comments about the club if he wants to return to the squad. The Egyptian winger was notably left out of the Reds' matchday squad for their UEFA Champions League clash at Inter Milan following his outburst, where he accused the manager of 'throwing him under the bus' amid the club's poor form.
The Anfield outfit secured a 1-0 win at San Siro on Tuesday, December 9, thanks to a late Dominik Szoboszlai penalty (88'). After the match, Slot was asked about the possibility of Salah returning to the squad.
He replied that the 33-year-old must first acknowledge his mistake and show remorse for his actions.
"Well, you say everyone makes mistakes in life but the question is should the players also recognize that as well. And should the initiative come from the player or from me?" Slot said (as quoted by Fabrizio Romano on X).
In his post-match outburst, Salah claimed that his relationship with Slot has turned sour. He also hinted at a possible exit from the club this winter, calling out the club for failing to stick to their promises to him.
Before his contract renewal in April this year, Salah was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. However, he opted to remain at Anfield, signing a two-year contract extension until 2027.
Liverpool secure crucial win at San Siro amid Mohamed Salah saga
Liverpool secured a hard-fought 1-0 win in their UEFA Champions League clash against Inter Milan at San Siro on Tuesday. Despite their poor form and Mohamed Salah's saga hanging over their shoulders, the Reds remained resolute to secure a much-needed win against the Serie A giants.
Slot's side came into the clash with just one win from their last six matches across competitions. Notably, they also lost 4-1 to PSV Eindhoven in their previous Champions League outing.
However, the Reds kept their heads above water by delivering a decent shift against Inter Milan. Ibrahima Konate had a goal chalked off for a handball by Hugo Ekitike in the buildup. It looked like both teams were going to share the spoils until Liverpool were handed a penalty late in the game for an Alessandro Bastoni foul on Florian Writz.
Dominik Szoboszlai scored the ensuing penalty, handing Slot a breather amid a turbulent period at the club. The win took Liverpool to eighth on the league phase standings with four wins and two losses from six games played so far.
The reigning Premier League champions will next face Brighton & Hove Albion in the league on Saturday, December 13.
