Jordan and the UAE clash at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar on Wednesday for their opening game of the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup in Group C. Ranked 66th in the world, it's been a year to remember for the Jordanians, who qualified for the World Cup for the first time in their history.
They finished second in Group B behind only South Korea with 16 points from 10 games as the Chivalrous Ones achieved a direct berth to next year's showpiece. On 5 December, the Middle Eastern side will learn their fate in the tournament when the group stage draws take place.
However, their preparations since achieving a historic qualification have been disappointing, with Jordan winning just once from their last six games and losing three times. In their most recent outing, Jamal Sellami's side drew 0-0 with Mali in a friendly game on 18 November.
Sellami has announced 23 players for the Arab Cup, including key forwards Ali Olwan and Yazan Al-Naimat, who have a combined 48 goals between them for Jordan. The squad doesn't feature a single uncapped player.
By contrast, the UAE fell agonizingly short of reaching the World Cup as Iraq beat them 3-2 on aggregate in the fifth round of the AFC qualifiers to reach the intercontinental playoffs at their expense.
The Sons of Zayed are now winless in their last three official games following a healthy run between July and October, and will be looking to banish the bitter World Cup qualifier memories by striking gold at the Arab Cup, a tournament they've never won before.
Head coach Cosmin Olăroiu has summoned 23 players for the Qatar showpiece, including Yahya Al-Ghassani. The 27-year-old Shabab Al Ahli star has netted 10 goals from 35 games for the UAE.
