Georgia will play hosts to European champions Spain on Saturday in Group E of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. La Roja are at the top of the group table and are aiming to punch their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They have already secured 12 points and currently lead second-placed Turkey by three points.
Georgia are in what you call the last chance saloon, needing to win both their upcoming matches to have a chance of making it to the playoffs. That's because they have only picked up three points from their four matches in Group E. Those three points came from a 3-0 win over Bulgaria in their second outing in the competition.
Before that, they had put up a late fight to walk away with their dignity intact in their opening qualifier against Turkey. It looked like the Turks would leave little to scavenge when they raced to a 3-0 lead with only 52 minutes gone.
However, the Crusaders pulled two back and eventually lost the game by a respectable 3-2 scoreline. The Turks weren't so kind the second time, though, dispatching Georgia 4-1 in mid-October during the last international break.
Meanwhile, Luis de la Fuente's men will have a spring in their steps as they step out on Saturday. They had dispatched Georgia 2-0 when the two sides met in October. After their penalty shootout heartbreak in the Nations League final in June against Portugal, Spain have been ruthless on both ends of the pitch.
They have won all four of their World Cup qualifying matches so far, and have scored a whopping 15 goals without conceding a single goal.
Georgia vs Spain Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- Georgia have won only one of their eight meetings with Spain in all competitions, losing all the other eight. The Crusaders have scored five goals across those seven matches, which pales in comparison to Spain's haul of 24.
- In addition to winning both of their upcoming group matches, Georgia's playoff chances will depend on Turkey dropping points.
- Spain are yet to concede a single goal in the World Cup qualifiers, shutting out the opposition in each of their last four matches.
- Georgia were eliminated by Spain in the round of 16 of the 2024 Euros. La Roja won that game by a thumping 4-1 scoreline.
Georgia vs Spain Prediction
Spain should be able to secure three points and if Turkey don't win their match against Bulgaria, they will seal a place in the World Cup. They are without some big names like Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Pedri and Nico Williams, but that does not leave them lacking in quality.
Georgia will come out swinging, with there being little room for error at this stage of the qualifiers. However, outplaying Spain's sharp attack and upending their sturdy defense seems a task too tough for them on current form.
Prediction: Georgia 0-2 Spain
