Club America and Monterrey go head-to-head at the Estadio Azteca in the second leg of the Mexican Liga MX Apertura playoff quarter-final clash on Saturday. Having suffered a 2-0 defeat in midweek, Andre Jardine’s men will need to be at their best this weekend as they look to overturn their first-leg deficit and continue their quest for the title.
Club America were condemned to back-to-back Liga MX defeats for the first time since September 2024 on Thursday, when they were beaten 2-0 by Monterrey in the first leg of the playoff quarter-finals at the Estadio BBVA.
Before that, Jardine’s side wrapped up the regular season with a somewhat disappointing 2-0 loss against Toluca in the season finale on November 9, one week before playing out a 2-2 friendly stalemate with MLS side LA Galaxy.
While Club America find themselves on the cusp of an early exit from the playoffs, they will be backing themselves to overturn the first-leg deficit on Saturday, as they return to the Estadio Azteca, where they are unbeaten in five straight league games against Monterrey since August 2020.
Sergio Canales and Fidel Ambriz both found the back of the net to fire Monterrey to victory against Club America on Thursday as the Rayados push for a first Apertura playoff title since 2019.
Domenec Torrent’s men had failed to win their final three games of the regular season, suffering defeats against Cruz Azul and Guadalajara on either side of a 1-1 draw against Tigres UANL on November 2.
Monterrey finished fifth in the 2025 Liga MX Apertura standings with 31 points from 17 games, seven points above seventh-placed Club Tijuana just outside the automatic playoff qualifying places.
