Espanyol return to action in the Copa del Rey when they journey to the Estadio Balear to face Atletico Baleares in the second round on Thursday. The Segunda Federacion outfit knocked out Gimnastic de Tarragona in the opening round while Espanyol were made to work their socks off in a narrow victory over Atletic Lleida.
Goals in either half from Juanmi Duran and Guillem Castell inspired Atletico Baleares to a 2-0 victory over Primera Federacion side Gimnastic de Tarragona in the first round of the Copa del Rey on October 30.
That cup victory has inspired an upturn in form for Luis Blanco’s men, who picked up three wins and one draw from their subsequent five matches, claiming victories in each of their most recent three games.
Atletico Baleares are currently third in the Segunda Federacion Group 3 standings with 24 points from 13 games, one point off first-placed UD Poblense.
Over in La Liga, veteran striker Kike Garcia grabbed the headlines for Espanyol as he came off the bench to find the target in the 86th minute and hand Espanyol a 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo last Sunday.
The result against Celta Vigo means Manolo Gonzalez’s side have won five of their most recent six matches across all competitions, a run which has seen them rise into sixth place in the La Liga standings.
Espanyol now turn their focus to the Copa del Rey, where they secured a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Segunda Federacion outfit Atletic Lleida on October 30 courtesy of a brace from Kike Garcia.
