Lewis Hamilton views his move to Ferrari as a positive and encouraging chapter in his career. Speaking to media, including Sportskeeda, in Las Vegas, the Briton looked back on the decision he made during the inaugural edition of the race in Nevada.
At the 2023 Las Vegas GP, Hamilton was first spotted walking into the paddock in Ferrari red for private discussions with CEO John Elkann, talks that eventually led to his announcement in February 2024 that he would be leaving Mercedes. One year on, his first season with Ferrari has delivered its share of highs and lows, both for the team and for Hamilton.
Hamilton is still chasing his first podium and victory in red. Asked by Sportskeeda how he reflected upon the decision of moving to Ferrari as he ended his maiden season with them, Lewis Hamilton replied:
“Yeah, it's crazy to think a year that has gone by. It's been an extraordinary experience from the moment I arrived. And I still just, I still pinch myself, honestly, that I'm in red, that I get to drive a Ferrari and get to represent some of these amazing people that you don’t get to see you obviously back at the factory. I joined this team knowing full well that it's it takes time to to steer a ship in a different direction and you know it this is this is a huge team it's a huge organization there are so many moving parts and we can't fix it in a click of the finger. It takes real time, so you know of course its not been what any of us have wanted in terms of a season um with the troubles that we've had and the results that we've had. But you know we just continue to push on full steam.”
Lewis Hamilton believes the ups and downs do not change much for him at Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton first season in red has been one of the most demanding campaigns of his career, marked by on-track struggles and inconsistent results. Despite the difficulties, the seven-time world champion praised the people he works with at Maranello, acknowledging that their commitment and work ethic have been a driving force behind his own motivation to push harder.
Asked if the ups and downs at Ferrari had affected him mentally, Lewis Hamilton said:
“It's not that it changes something. It's, of course, our goal is to get to the front, and we're not at the front. And I take it all incredibly personally, I'm 100 % invested in this. And I know every single person in this team from the back to the front feels what I feel, and we share it together. But we turn up every weekend. I'm motivated by seeing everyone that comes to the track each week, still positive. This is the kindest group of people I have worked with in terms of just how everyone is so welcoming, every one is so polite everyone is so warm. It is a really beautiful, you can feel that culture within the team and I love it.”
Lewis Hamilton's only victory for Ferrari this season remains his sprint win in China. The Briton has accumulated 122 points so far, while his teammate Charles Leclerc sits on 148. Ferrari is locked in a tight battle with Mercedes and Red Bull for second place in the constructors’ standings.
As it stands, the Maranello outfit is fourth, just four points behind Red Bull and 36 points shy of Mercedes. With three Grands Prix and one sprint remaining, the fight for second place is expected to go down to the wire between the three teams.
