Where Winds Meet walkthrough: How to complete Volume III - Beneath the Eaves

Where Winds Meet Beneath the Eaves side quest
Beneath the Eaves is a short, but sad side quest in Where Winds Meet (Image via NetEase)

Once you’re in Kaifeng in Where Winds Meet, you can take on a number of side quests, including Beneath the Eaves. While it’s one of the shorter side quests, compared to ones like Shadows in Bloom, it shouldn’t take too much of your time. You will need to at least have the basics of building down, and while we aren’t sure if unlocking building is a requirement, it will be a part of this quest.

While short, it is a pretty emotional side quest in Where Winds Meet, so do be prepared for that when starting Beneath the Eaves. You will also need to change time a few times, unless you’re prepared to just wait it out, which we don’t recommend.

Complete Beneath the Eaves walkthrough in Where Winds Meet

You should be able to begin Beneath the Eaves after completing New Guest in Kaifeng in Where Winds Meet, and you will find it in your journal under Side Quests. Just track it from there, and head down to the Imperial Works Bureau fast travel location. Below is everything you’ll need to know about this quest.

1) Inquire about this person’s intentions, Talk to Li Shun, Rebuild the Four-rafter House in Build Mode

You can’t begin this part of Beneath the Eaves in Where Winds Meet, until it is the hour of Chen, so get to the location for the quest, and open up the clock. Just fast forward the time until you have Chen highlighted, and when that’s confirmed, there will be an NPC to speak to, to inquire about their intentions.

Speak to Shi Jihuai and he’ll praise you, stating they need more workers to do some building demolishing and rebuilding. You were chosen because of your martial arts prowess and since you’re a good martial artist, you’re likely in good enough shape to work on housing. Either way, agree to help him, and you’ll get going in Beneath the Eaves in Where Winds Meet.

You’ll find Li Shun nearby, so just follow the quest marker to him. He’ll start walking, so follow him to the place you need to be at. He’s a little disgruntled that you don’t have much carpentry experience, but has a manual you can use, which teaches you how to build a Four-rafter house. For this step, you need to do two things:

  • Dismantle the misplaced pillar
  • Place the Pillar onto the Base

Enter Building Mode, and look at the left side of the house. You can see three pillars in the image above, but one isn’t on a stone base. We’ve circled it, so just Dismantle the circled pillar, and then place it on the location we’ve put an arrow next to. It should really stand out, but just in case it doesn’t, we’ve got you covered.

2) Talk to Li Shun, Investigate the suspicious figure, Eavesdrop on the artisans’ conversations, Retrieve the Timberwork Manual Manuscript

After talking to Li Shun, he’ll ask about the manual, because he spent a very long time copying it. Before the two of you can get far, a strange man runs past, steals it, and begins shredding pages out of it while running away. This suspicious figure is your next objective, so go investigate them.

However, you’ll find Shi Jihuai staked out next to a strange little house, where the suspicious figure lives. It’s the one building left in this area, and he refuses to leave, as it’s his home. Several people have tried to get this suspicious figure to leave in Where Winds Meet, but nobody has succeeded.

You’ll learn more about this situation by eavesdropping on the artisans’ conversations, so follow the quest markers, and use the Eavesdrop button to listen. After this, return to Li Shan, who will tell you the original manual was stolen! This part of Beneath the Eaves in Where Winds Meet will require you to sneak into the man’s home in the courtyard.

Just walk around back, crouch and leap through the window to retrieve the Timberwork Manual Manuscript. Unfortunately, only one page remains. Leave through the window again, and return the item to Li Shun for the last steps of Where Winds Meet’s Beneath the Eaves.

3) Complete the Four-rafter House in Build Mode, Talk to Shi Jihuai, Wait until Tomorrow, Go to Ding Pu’s house and return Ding Mu’er’s dagger to him, Unearth the jar of wine Ding Pu buried by the tree

However, all is not lost. Now you need to Complete the Four-rafter House in Build Mode. You just need to place the White Wall, Window, and Lattice Door pieces up. This is very easy, though I do recommend turning Free Camera on, to make their placement easy. You will put four window pieces in each window, four door pieces in the doorway, and then just fill in the walls. It shouldn’t take more than a minute or two to get this sorted.

Afterwards, go talk to Shi Jihuai, and the quest marker will lead you right to him over at the Artifacts Bureau. After a conversation with the bureaucrat, you will come away with a knife with strange lettering on it. This will also complete the Four-Rafter House.

The game says Wait until Tomorrow (the next day in real time), but I just fast forwarded the time to the next day, and after doing a few things in game like fishing and combat, I was able to see the next step, Go to Ding Pu’s house and return Ding Mu’er’s dagger to him.

Ding Pu will taunt you, saying that nobody can make him leave, but he’ll change his mind when you reveal the dagger to him. This will lead to an important bit of backstory for Ding Pu in Where Winds Meet. I won’t spoil it, but it’s worth checking out. You’ll unearth a jar of wine Ding Pu buried by the tree, and share a cup with him.

After one more cutscene, Ding Pu will demolish his home and leave, so he can continue to fight the Khitan. With that, Where Winds Meet’s Beneath the Eaves is complete, and you will unlock the Coin Earrings cosmetics alongside your other rewards.
