Stealing a horse from a random NPC

The fastest method of getting a mount is by stealing from a random NPC. Right from the beginning, you will encounter NPC riders moving along the roads in Jianghu. When you approach them, a Snatch Horse option will appear. Once you trigger that, your character will throw them off the horse and take control of that mount.
Bounty system
Stealing a horse will make the NPC hostile, and they will start a fight. If you beat them up and steal the horse successfully, you will get the Horse Thief Achievement, and a bounty will be placed on you. Once you have a bounty, local warriors will immediately attack you. It is recommended to avoid them, as some of them can be super tanky and stun you pretty easily.

Follow the story objective to get your first horse

Early in the campaign, you will be asked to go to the General’s Shrine by Ruby. Once you make it past the Boundary Stone, a small cutscene will show two NPCs getting up on horses and escaping and confronting the protagonist.

Once the dialogue ends, a Snatch Horse appears. Once you have snatched the horse, both NPCs will attack you. Defeat one successfully, and both will disappear; otherwise, you can head inside, and the confrontation will end. This is technically the first permanent horse you get by following the story of Where Winds Meet.
How to tame horses in Where Winds Meet

If you want to avoid unnecessary aggression against NPCs, you can get a horse by taming it in the wilderness of Jianghu. This requires you to jump on a horse unnoticed and complete a minigame.
Catching a wild horse is difficult, so be discreet, as they will run off the moment you are noticed. Here are the steps to successfully taming a horse in Where Winds Meet:
- Slowly move behind the horse. If you have the Veil of Stillness skill (makes you undetectable for a few seconds), use it to sneak up to the horse.
- Once near the horse, jump on its back and trigger the taming minigame.
- The taming minigame requires you to match incoming directional inputs.
This is the most difficult step while catching a horse in Where Winds Meet. However, it is a free option, and catching multiple horses is beneficial to you, as they can be sold to a horse merchant for coins. Look for wild horses in open fields and near ponds or lakes.
