You can unlock fishing pretty early in Where Winds Meet as well. If you just want to take a break from all the intense Wuxia combat and stand by a river, watching the world pass you by, why not take part in some fishing?

You can begin Fishing while exploring the Verdant Wilds in Where Winds Meet by finding Chu Shuiyang. She’s down by the water near the General’s Shrine, and you can see the exact location in the screenshot below.

She’ll ask if you want to compete against her in fishing, because it’s always more fun if you’ve got a rival to fish against. Agree by saying Want a Fishing Rod, and you’ll receive the Kid’s Fishing Rod and some bait. The game will show you how to get started, so follow the tutorial.

After you’ve got the Fishing Rod equipped in Where Winds Meet, you can begin fishing! Take part in the mini-game, and you’ll need to catch the specified fish before she can get to them. On the screen, you’ll see a fishy objective. The first one for example is the Black Bream, which requires Worm Bait.

The game will also show you how to swap to the right bait, so do that, cast your line, and reel that fish in. Shake the rod a few times after a good, long cast, and move the mouse/left stick to stay within the green meter until it prompts you to catch a fish.

Choose your bait by holding L2+ Triangle/Circle/Alt+Mouse Scroll Wheel, and then cast the line with Square/E. Jiggle the line a few times, and before long, a fish will be on the line.

The better your fishing rod, the easier it is to guide the cursor into the green area. The bigger/rarer the fish, the smaller your green area will be. That means you’ll need a better rod, because if you're using a weak rod, you will very often overshoot those small green areas, like for Catfish.

Thankfully, you can purchase the Little Toad’s Rod from a few peddlers. The easiest one to get is at Heaven’s Pier from Xiong Da. It’s relatively cheap, and so is the bait, which you can also purchase here. The Little Toad's Rod is a slight upgrade from the Kid’s Fishing Rod, and in my experience, it makes catching those fish significantly easier.

If you’re looking to challenge yourself, you can head to any Fishing Contest, for some exp and a handful of great fish. These can get difficult, so eventually you’ll have to find a better peddler with a better fishing rod.

Once we’ve found more fishing rods, we’ll update this article accordingly. Your rewards for fishing are Jade Fish, XP, and Research Points.
