The Disguise system in Where Winds Meet allows you to temporarily become someone else, to make a variety of quests and infiltrations much easier. It also lets you take on disguise missions for Lady Wuyan, who runs the cosmetics shop in Kaifeng. They’re truly some of the most interesting activities you can do in this entire Wuxia fantasy experience.
While you can’t turn into absolutely everybody, there are NPCs that you can temporarily transform into, provided you have enough ranks in the skill, and go through the proper steps. Here’s the how and why’s of Disguise in Where Winds Meet.
How to unlock the Disguise skill in Where Winds Meet
Once you’ve been to Kaifeng and can explore the city in Where Winds Meet, you can begin the Disguise skill side quest. You just need to head over to the green book icon on the east side of the city, in the Fairgrounds. Disguise: Veil of Love is the quest you need to complete, and you can see it in the image below.

There are a few fast travels you can use, including one right next to Wuyan’s shop. I had to use the Grand Imperial Temple fast travel, which is also circled on the image above. Once you get to her shop, go inside and speak to Wuyan, and she’ll ask you a question on whether people get Trapped by the Heart or Trapped by the look, while in love. We suggested it’s by the look, and she offered us a chance to “give it a shot”.
While she’s not the legendary Water Lady, she can temporarily make you look like someone else. You’re going to have to transform into the beloved of Qiao Sanlang, who just happens to be Wuyan’s sister. She doesn’t have the heart to break it off with him, so you’re going to do it for her.
However, you also need to retrieve an item from Qiao Sanlang. This is another fun aspect of Disguise in Where Winds Meet. You can ask for items from people, and there’s a much better chance than normal they’ll give it to you. If you don’t know how:
- Enter Wind Sense
- Target the NPC you want an item from
- Select the item
Try doing it without the disguise, and you’ll fail, but that’s part of the quest. Return to Wuyan and you’ll learn the first step of getting into disguise. You need a portrait of the NPC in question. Follow the quest icon to go to Fang Wenxiu’s shop, and draw a portrait of her:

- Get fairly close to the target, when you see a mask symbol over them (if you’re too close the game will tell you)
- Press the appropriate button to enter drawing mode
- Hover over the target NPC and press the button shown on screen
- Press the Start Painting button
- Press the Head to Disguise button to return to Wuyan
When you’ve done that, speak to Wuyan again for the next step of the Disguise quest in Where Winds Meet. Tell her you’re ready to be transformed, and she’ll change your style. Now, return to Qiao Sanlang, use Wind Sense, and ask for the item in his backpack. This time you’ll have a 100% success rate, and tell him to forget about “you”.
You then need to use the item in your inventory before speaking to Wenyan again. She says to always come to her if you need a disguise, and that will wrap up this mission, unlocking Disguise for you in Where Winds Meet.
Here’s the wrapup of how Disguise works:
- You must have a target that can be turned into (mask icon)
- You need at least one sheet of Paper (bought at Woodcraft shops)
- Get close to them, and press the button to enter drawing mode
- Draw the target, and return to Wuyan and ask her to disguise you
- Pick the proper person you wish to become
- If you’re not high enough rank, you may need to do a side quest or two for her, first
- Get Wuyan to disguise you, and go complete whatever mission you need to undertake
What is the Disguise skill useful for in Where Winds Meet?

Disguise has a few uses in Where Winds Meet, but primarily, it’s for missions that require stealth. A good example is unlocking the Rope Dart martial art skills. You can’t get into the base to learn the martial arts style, but after trying a few times, you should stumble into a man who recommends Disguise.
There’s a Rope Dart martial artist near the dojo, and you can use Disguise to turn into him, and then perform some sneaky actions inside the dojo itself to learn the skill. You can then speak to Ni Laoshan (the NPC who suggested disguise), who will praise your work. This will give you a Nine Mortal Ways contact.

There are other uses for Disguise, or you can simply go do side quests for Shopkeeper Wenyan. She’s got a bunch of very interesting side quests you can undertake to level up your disguise skill, which will in turn, let you take on even more challenging disguises.
It’s an incredibly fun part of the game, especially for people who like to be sneaky. There are even exclusive items you can't get any other way, than by using Disguise, as you can see with the NPC in the screenshot above.
