Mysteria Ecclesiae, meaning "mysteries of the church," offers players an infamous yet intriguing experience in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. While Warhorse Studios has already released two premium paid DLC for the acclaimed title, this third one felt extra special.

With a completely new backdrop of the Sedletz monastery, the DLC has a story-driven playthrough that emphasizes less fighting and more investigation. The story revolves around a mysterious plague, a consequential quarantine, and Henry's determination to decipher the mystery behind it all.

While previous DLC stories were playable simultaneously with the base game, Mysteria Ecclesiae took me to a new location where I was technically stuck. And to make my way out, I needed to unravel various mysteries, and on top of that, the story's epilogue depended on my actions.

All in all, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is my favorite RPG of 2025, and a DLC like Mysteria Ecclesiae is a cherry on top. With phenomenal role-playing elements, top-notch storytelling, and a well-developed cast of characters, the gameplay remains captivating, enhancing the overall experience of the base game.

With every DLC launch in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Warhorse Studios unveiled new gameplay mechanics. As I started Mysteria Ecclesiae, I was wondering what would be new here. When I was transported to the Sedletz monastery, the experience became gradually intense and intriguing.

With six main quests in Mysteria Ecclesiae, the first one being the introductory mission, the full focus of this DLC is just on the narrative and the events that unfold as a result. Being in a quarantine state to investigate an ongoing plague, all while being sneaky with limited resources, every aspect of the DLC is direct and thrilling.

In addition to the main narrative, various side elements tie into the story, and the design is so cohesive that failing to complete certain tasks at the right moments results in their loss.

Engaging with some side quests also felt meaningful because of their connection to the main plot, which somewhat helped in my progression. Overall, the story flows exceptionally well and kept me thoroughly hooked until the end.

The mystifying setting of Sedletz monastery

The developers of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 have truly excelled in their detailed creation of the monastery. Although Sedletz was visible in the base game, the in-depth design and story relevance elevate the monastery from a mere setting to a meaningful, captivating escapade.

While this Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 DLC story limited my ability to travel outside of Sedletz, the monastery had everything I needed. Were some items in a small amount? Yes. Were they initially hard to locate? Yes. But the overall layout of Sedletz and quest placement felt intuitive, giving a sense that everything was exactly where it should be.

The visual aspects and background score are also well integrated into the DLC. The resonant vocals and mysterious tune of Saint Barbara take the narrative to another level.

It's also pretty great that even after completing the DLC story, you can return to Sedletz to relieve it whenever you want. Given that the Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 already has many excellent locations, the addition of this monastery feels both fresh and precious.

Mysteria Ecclesiae prioritizes mystery over mayhem

Throughout my time at the Sedletz monastery in Mysteria Ecclesiae, I got into fights perhaps four or five times. While you can certainly opt for more battles, the DLC narrative mainly focuses on revealing truths without resorting to conflict. At times, however, it is necessary to use the Persuasion or Speech stats to avoid battles.

Without revealing too much of the plot, the storyline of Mysteria Ecclesiae is about the sudden appearance of a plague at the Sedletz monastery. No one knows why it occurred, and initially, some are ignorant of it. Henry's job? Take matters into his hands and uncover the underlying reasons.

While doing so, Henry discovers the origins of the disease; however, as its spread intensifies, it leads to a quarantine state of the monastery, thus complicating Henry's efforts. With time, he got to know something far more profound and personal about the disease than he had anticipated.

The negatives

During my playthrough, there were not many drawbacks that I found with Mysteria Ecclesiae to write home about. However, if you are looking for more brawls or sword fights in the DLC, you will be disappointed. The experience is predominantly narrative-focused, emphasizing stealth and the art of persuasion in various forms to navigate past guards and engage with characters.

As for bugs, I encountered a problem with the auto-follow mechanics at the start of the DLC, as I became impeded by an NPC when trying to pass through a door. Aside from this issue, I also observed a few visual glitches while navigating the monastery.

Nonetheless, the overall experience remains intact with minimal disruptions, and throughout my gameplay, I never had to exit the game or load previous save files.

Final thoughts

In a year full of Expedition 33, Hades 2, Silksong, Death Stranding 2, and ARC Raiders, the most content and fulfilling one for me was Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. With its exceptional role-playing elements and a prominent design of medieval Bohemia, the overall experience is peak.

Now, with the release of the Mysteria Ecclesiae DLC, I am again blessed with more of that sentiment. This was possibly the final story expansion for Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and Warhorse Studios made sure that the single-player campaign lovers get the maximum enjoyment from it in the present and in the future.

The narrative may be brief, yes, but the expedition to unravel the mysteries of the church is truly remarkable. The monastery's succinct backdrop, combined with a captivating storyline, made everything from start to end feel fresh and compelling.

Drawing from my recent quarantine experience, Mysteria Ecclesiae hits the right spot. I learned that the church hides more than prayers.
