Tuning in Where Winds Meet is the backbone of the end-game gear grind, and the system kicks in once you start using Tier 41+ equipment. It looks simple on the surface, but there are a few rules you need to understand before you start burning materials or accidentally dismantling something valuable.
Here is how Tuning in Where Winds Meet works.
Tuning in Where Winds Meet explained
Once a piece of gear reaches tier 41, it becomes eligible for Tuning in Where Winds Meet. Every tier 41 or higher piece of gear has 'Tuning Slots' tied to its tier and rarity. The higher tier/rarity equals more tuning attempts. Each gear piece already comes with its first tune rolled, so you’ll immediately see whether the item started off with a good affix or not.

There’s even an 'RCMD' marker next to the tuned stat that tells you whether the affix fits the weapon type or build you’re currently running.
Once you tune a stat, that roll is locked. There’s no reroll button, no undo, no reset. If the stat is bad, you either live with it or keep farming until you get a better drop and tune that one instead. That’s why end-game players grind gear aggressively and you’re fishing for high-roll affixes with no chance to reroll.
Tune freely, experiment, and don’t worry about bad stats. The real min-maxing only matters when you hit high-tier gear.
What you need to Tune gear
You can tune the gear using:
- Other gear of the exact same tier, or
- Tuning Stones of the same tier
Tier matching is strict. Tier 41 gear only accepts Tier 41 tuning materials. Tier 50 gear only accepts Tier 50 materials, and so on. You also have special Tuning Stones that work on every tier. These are rare and should never be wasted early. Save them for the true end-game grind.
Identifying special gear for Tuning
Some dropped gear pieces come with unique Tuning effects, such as:
- Guaranteed purple (Epic) tuning
- Guaranteed legendary tuning
- Extra tuning experience
These bonuses only trigger if you use that gear as Tuning material, not if you dismantle it. If you recycle these items, you lose the special effect and only get normal stones. So always set aside items with unique tuning properties. Everything else can be safely scrapped to free inventory space and farm stones.
How to farm Tuning Stones in Where Winds Meet
The main way to farm Tuning Stones in Where Winds Meet:
- Outposts
- Campaign Challenges
- Sword Trials
Dismantle everything you don’t need, except for special tuning-effect pieces. The nightly multiplayer Firework Show in Kaifeng (Velvet Shade district) also gives general all-tier Tuning Stones. These work on every gear tier, so they are extremely valuable.
