A Mandrake is a mob that spawns in the overworld as a living being. They are found in the grasslands of the Mandrake Forest area of the Forest biome and is always a guaranteed spawn, so it is only a manner of exploring to find this location. Howveer, only a handful of Mandrakes spawn here and they do not respawn when picked or killed, making them limited in number.
That said, Mandrakes are one of the many rewards obtained upon opening Loot Stashes at a 20% drop rate, and these are technically farmable as they respawn in the open world every Winter season. As for behavior, Mandrakes are passive mobs so they will not attack the player. They stay buried during the day and picking them up at this time will cause them to die instantly.
At dusk or night, they will follow the player around making noise while also keeping a safe distance. That said, Mandrakes only have 20 Health, making them easy to kill instantly. Mandrakes are also items, meaning they can be consumed or used for crafting purposes and do not spoil.
They heal 60 Health and 75 Hunger upon consumption, though this is not recommended. Not only are there better, more common consumables to upkeep stats in Don't Starve Together, but eating Mandrakes will the user and anyone around them to sleep for 10 seconds, including other mobs.
Mandrakes can be used to craft the following items:
- Mandrake Soup: Restores 100 Health, 150 Hunger, and 5 Sanity without any sleep effects but spoils quickly. Requires Crock Pot to make.
- Pan Flate: Puts all mobs in the vicinity of the user to sleep (except those that cannot fall asleep).
While Mandrake Soup is nice to have, it is the Pan Flute that is the superior option here due to its strong effects. Using it allows gaining an upper hand over the hostile mobs or to obtain resources from them. Do note that like with other items in Don't Starve Together, Pan Flute has durability os it will eventually break.
This disadvantage can be mitigated by dismantling the item via a Deconstruction Staff and then recrafting it to refresh the durability.
