Where Winds Meet allows you to play the game as you see fit. It lets you learn on the go and make mistakes as you progress. However, some of these can cost you the early game and make you fumble later on. While it is only natural that you'll want to learn on the go, at times, not going in blind is the better option, especially if you want to make the most of your first playthrough.
For that reason, here are five beginner mistakes to avoid in Where Winds Meet that will hopefully let you experice the game to the fullest the first time around.
Don't ignore Side Quests and four other beginner mistakes to avoid in Where Winds Meet
1) Don't ignore Side Quests

Side Quests can often be boring, but in Where Winds Meet, they do play a significant role in character development, quite literally. Aside from XP and items, you will also be able to upgrade your Medicine Chest, which will allow you to carry more Wound Balms. This is rather useful as you will be able to heal wounds on the fly and stay in the fight. That said, don't avoid Side Quests. They are fun and don't take much time.
2) Chase the Butterflies (Oddity System)

The Oddity System in Where Winds Meet allows you to get permanent account-wide stat upgrades. It goes without saying that this will benefit your character(s). To make the most of this system, you will need to keep your eyes open for Butterflies, Crickets, and Glowing Purple Flowers.
Butterflies boost your attack power, Crickets give a defense boost, and Glowing Purple Flowers increase your health. Suffice it to say, they are worth collecting and will, in the long run, boost your overall stats by a very large margin.
3) Unlock Boundary Stone(s) to save time

The map in Where Winds Meet is covered by fog. Not everything is visible to you from the very get-go, which is rather normal in modern-day titles of the same genre. To unlock a region, you will have to keep an eye out for Campfire Icons and talk to the Wayfarer. Once done, the fog will be lifted, and you will have an unhindered view of the region.
To take things a step further (and faster), while exploring, you'll want to keep an eye out for Boundary Stone(s). These will serve as your fast-travel points and allow you to travel between regions with a click of the button and not waste time getting around on foot.
4) Button mashing is not the optimal way to fight

Button mashing is acceptable, but it's not the best or optimal way to fight. In the early game, pressing everything at once will get you by, but as you progress, combat will need to be more strategic. Learning how to parry and dodge will be as important as attacking.
For this reason, getting a grasp of the control from the very start is advisable. It will help you learn the art of combat and enable you to react according to any given situation.
5) Skip Dual Blades at the start

There are many weapons you can use in Where Winds Meet, as well as combos. Pairing two of them together and switching between them opens up options during combat. At the start of the game, you may be eager to choose the Dual Blades. They look great and function well. However, avoid doing this at all costs.
While there's nothing wrong with choosing them, it's far better to choose something like the Umbrella or the Spear. The reason is that Dual Blades will naturally become available to you in a few hours. The same cannot be said for the Umbrella or the Spear, as you'll need 10 plus hours to unlock them.
